Games People Love to Hate

Some games fall foul to the collective hatred of the Internet. According to the Internet, they are worse than Hitler. People just hate them, and in recent memory I can think of two, both of which came out in the last holiday season.

Fallout 3 was already destined to fail. It took a loved franchise, and messed with it completely. While in the end it was a good game, hell, a very good game, it was still hated. The fact that it was slightly buggy only added fuel to the fire of hatred, and soon came the huge, inevitable, backlash. What were once Fallout fansites were breeding grounds for hate of it's new deformed brother - people simply didn't like it. It's settled down now, but for a short while Fallout 3 was one of the most hated games on the planet. That was, until...

Fable 2 was too destined to fail, but for a different reason, and that reason was Peter Molyneux. Everyone knew Fable 2 couldn't live up to the hype, and when it didn't there wasn't as much hate as simply refusing to play it. Rather than establishing fanboys, people just became anti-Molyneux. He promised an open world, and... it wasn't. And sadly, it seems things are destined to stay that way - people just don't want to play Fable 2. They're not against it, they just don't care. That's the unfortunate part - it's a good game that I've sunk about 30 hours into; Peter Molyneux effectively killed his own game.

What other games are there like these, ones that people were against, mostly on principle?

Games with huge fan bases. There is nothing wrong with the Halo series, but because of it's fans, certain people will always hate them.

I like to think people hate halo wars...
but thats just me :( and some others :p
I've played some good RTS', but that has got to be hands-down one of the worst.
not the worst, I've played some truly terrible and scarring games...

but basicly, people seem to hate the games with loads of fans/players.

Wait, I don't think I've seen anyone who hates Fallout 3. There were so many threads here about it, and I here people praise it a lot. Wait, was the definition of "Hate' changed or something?

People love to hate on EA and on Two Worlds--with good reason. Though I think I might like it if I try it again with an open mind and putting aside the voice acting and frame-rate issue.

I've grown to hate Fallout 3 after a two months. Even some of the hate of the 50's theme rubbed off on Bioshock and made me kind of hate it too.

Well ive found that people say they hate portal just to be "that guy" or to sound edgy in the non-conformist way. Seems to be the way to getting attention by hating something everyone seems to agree is fairly good.
Oh, sure, that makes sense. We've all run into "that guy". Just hadn't personally run into a Portal-flavored one yet.

Oh, and there are loads of people who hate Fallout 3. The original Fallouts have a very passionate fanbase, many of whom decided they hated Fallout 3 as soon as they learned who was making it. (Not saying that they're the only ones who didn't like it, of course.)

Lots of folks hate Oblivion, too, for similar reasons.

But that is stupid :S
One of the reasons Portal is popular is becose of how original and un-conformistic it is.

Read through this thread. It's on a Fallout fansite. This isn't even only the worst I've seen, just the first thread I found. Hunt around that forum a bit, and you'll find some hate. Probably a lot.

Go look at No Mutants Allowed. You pretty much have to hate Fallout 3 for the community there to not bash you.

Yeah, this is news to me.
I don't understand Portal, but I don't hate it. It just strikes me as game that would be popular for the novelty of the key feature, the portal gun in this case and maybe a few other things, but would die off once the novelty wore off; which I kinda thought would've happened by now. But I admit I haven't actually played the game, so maybe it's got some other charms that I'm missing.

Franchises that were good during the PS1 era and then sucked the next. I am looking at you Crash Bandicoot with your insanely long load times and Spyro the Dragon with your unnecessary control changes.

I appreciate people who make this distinction-- "I don't get it, but that doesn't mean it's bad." Sadly, not enough people do that.

The puzzles of Portal are brilliantly constructed. What's really impressive about the game is how subtlely it changes how you think. Maneuvers that stymie you on the first few levels rapidly become matter-of-course...which naturally allows for more complex puzzles, using more intricate maneuvers. It builds on itself brilliantly, in ways I've seen few other games manage.

Give it a try. I'm not saying you'll adore it (not everyone does), but I think you'll come to appreciate it.
