Don't Starve was the exception to the rule that I hate minecraft/survival style games. I only wish Don't Starve did away with the magic element and kept it more realistic. Still, great little survival game.
Ikaruga was the exception to shoot em ups. No particular reason why with this one. I don't feel it does all that much unique or special within the genre but it simply felt forgiving enough for me to persist with it to the final stage.
Street Fighter is my exception to fighting games. This is almost entirely because their controls are prohibitive. But even something simplistic like Smash Bros fails to provide lasting enjoyment for me.
