Every Valve game ever.
I have to say L4D2 was kinda a combo breaker.
I'd also say it's not a perfect example because I really haven't seen much hype for any Valve game besides Portal and Half Life 2 Episode 3 which is getting the same kind of "when will this ever happen" kind of hype Duke Nukem Forever had.

Mass Effect 2 comes to mind straightaway, as does LittleBigPlanet 2.
LBP 2 is the greatest thing to happen to PS3 owners worldwide.

Patapon 3! seriously. it's really good.

Hmm a game that people actually played on this website. Well dragon age origins was pretty good and I really didn't consider it until two months before dragon age two came out.

It was probably the most hyped game of the year as well. At least in Sydney I know there were ads for it everywhere and I wasn't going to get it because it was so hyped up, but it turned out great. What didn't you like about the ending?

I can say a game that DOES NOT live up to the hype I have to personally say Demon's Souls. I recently picked it up expecting some overly hard game that just didn't relent and cause me to rage and throw a controller across the room. So far its pretty easy and a mediocre game AT BEST. I do like a good RPG game but seriously if that is the best game that has come out of the year 2009 I have great fear of the future of gaming.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighters 1 and 2

I doubt a lot of people played them, but they were quite good
AIs that were not dumb as a rock, good campaign, good multiplayer (well... I liked it)

Team Fortress 2: I was late to the party, but I've heard how hyped it was. It deserved every bit of it. over 500 hours clocked. bought it last Summer.

Batman Arkham Asylum: Everyone was pissing themselves with glee over this. I thought it would suck. "wait, so Batman is trapped in ARKHAM? HOW FUCKING STUPID IS HE? HE'S TRAPPED... IN A JAIL. WUT.". Thankfully, I was 100% WRONG. GOTY 2009.

Red Dead Redemption: It wasn't EVERYWHERE (not like Portal 2, which I can't WAIT to play, or Batman), but I was still hyped as hell. One of the few games as of late to recieve an actual emotional response from me. It was fun, it was adventurous, it was touching, it was profound, it was BEAUTIFUL. GOTY 2010 and somewhere in my top 10 games of all time.

Pokemon Black and White: I was excited for this. Lots of people were. It wasn't until about a week till release that I realised, "holy fuck. I'm about to play a NEW POKEMON GAME.". THAT'S when the excitement kicked in. The week leading up to launch was pure Poke-mania. It was the 90's again. POKEMON. FUCKING. EVERYWHERE. I was actually somewhat suprised, it EXCEEDED my expectations. It's easily the best since G/S/C (or HG/SS). Great story and I was suprised how much I liked most of the new Pokemon. Great game. Easily lands in the top 10 of 2011 so far.

That's all I can think of atm, hopefully Portal 2, L.A. Noire, and Batman Arkham City will be added to this list in due time.

Oblivion. I absolutely love it compared to Morrowind. I'm still playing through it now. I have yet to actually finish the main quest, I've been working on side quests and guild quests (I'm the Gray Fox, Archmage of the Mages Guild, Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, Master of the Fighters Guild, and Grand Champion of the Arena :D)

Portal 2 and Dead Space 2. Dead Space 2 was an amazing sequel and got me to like Issac a bit more while Portal 2 built upon what made Portal 2 great and made it better.
I totally agree with this. Dead Space 2 gave us more weapons and necromorphs and was able to give Issac a voice and a personality without ruining him as the main character. Personally I love the way GLaDOS is developed further in Portal 2 and how you are able to look at her in a different light by the end of the game.

Fallout: New Vegas. - It brought a character back from the original series...and didn't kill him!

In the first Dead Space all I wanted to do was get off the fucking ship. I eventually did. It's like Issac is looking for trouble in Dead Space 2.
Isaac knows he's the only one who can destroy the Marker and he even says "I'm not running an more." Dead Space 2 is all about Isaac using everything he learned from the first game to fight back and stop Aegis 7 from happening all over again, especially because he's at the center of it all.

Both Dead Space 1 + 2 are about Isaac's struggles, so not that much has changed.

Well it's not really survival horror if you're not running away and, you know, trying to survive. It's more like an action game.
There's plenty of running away (like at the beginning) and escaping is definitely on Isaac's list. It's just not at the top of the list. Trust me, Dead Space will never 'try' to be survival horror in the same way Resident Evil does and ends up being an action game instead. By then you may as well leave the series to starve in the sewers.
