As a bit of a counterpoint and to cheer me up after the ending of ME3 and the relentless depression that is The Walking Dead I thought I'd ask, what games make you feel like a badass and have a good ending?
Infamous 2.
Specifically the good ending (I kept trying to be evil and failing after twenty minutes). The ME3 debacle reminded me of this. Yes, it's kind of a "sad" ending because the hero dies and all superpowers are gone forever, but dammit, you get to put up a fight on your way out, and you die saving the world, and you definitely know that that's what you did. And you get to see what happens to the characters you've spent two games with. And you don't get hit with some magical bullshitty last-minute M. Night Shyamalan twist.

Closure, basically, is what I'm getting at.

...I think I'll play that game again.
You're gonna want to put that in Spoiler tags, not everyone has played inFamous 2 yet, and probably won't appreciate you ruining the ending for them.
On the same hand, dont quote spoilers -_- I havent beaten that game yet...

OT: I have to admit it feels pretty badass when your playing supreme commander 2 when your fighting someone and finally getting the upper hand by hitting him with 3 nuclear bombs just cleansing the whole map of enemies in fire

The irony is, since you quoted it, your now spoilering it.

I'll jump in on the Infamous bandwagon. Sniping a dude in the face with precision lightning while grinding a wire is just freaking sweet. Follow it up with an a freaking tornado that's channeling lightning everywhere, and there's not really anything that can stand in your way. Gods help you if there's an ionized atmosphere around.

And, really, God of War. All of them. How can God of War not make you feel badass? You are literally killing gods and titans. The oldest, strongest, most powerful motherfuckers around. Couple that in with the very violent puzzles, traps, tricks, and puzzle-traps, and beating it just makes you feel like you've done something impossible.

I've just had a scan of my Steam library and can't really find anything unplayed which fits the bill. Serious Sam TSE has the badass bit down, but it's overall a bit too stressful. Unless I turn the difficulty right down I guess.

So, any ideas?
I'd give the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors/Warriors Orochi series a try. While not the greatest of stories (actually I thought that, for a Koei game, Warriors Orochi 3 had a decent little story :p) they definitely got the "make you feel like a badass" part down because they're pretty mindless...just run around and chop countless puny soldiers to shreds. It's actually pretty cathartic if you ask me, just good ol' fashioned hack'n'slash mayhem.

Many many people here hitting the 'badass' angle, very few with the 'good' ending. Although I clearly didn't explain myself well, good didn't mean quality, it meant happy or positive.

Space Marine sounds a good bet though, the demo was pretty fun. Does it have a depressing ending?
Well the hero after just defeating a Demon Prince in single combat is taken away by the inquisition to face trial due to his strange immunity to the effects of the warp. So yeah I'd say it's pretty upbeat by Warhammer 40k standards.

Hmmm, for me the feeling of complete badassery come from a combination of genuine challenge, something can be as cool as it likes without challenge there no feeling of accomplishment. Mixed with.... actually I can't define what it is, it's swooping, beating, shooting, stealthing?, it's unique to each game.

Anyway a game to feel like a badass.... hmmm one that hasn't been mentioned, I've got admit there was a respectable amount of badass in the first few levels of mirrors edge, just something about outrunning a helicopter or disarming a police man or jumping between buildings. But don't play the second half of the game, it was shit.

Oh and Half life 2, right after the strider battle outside the suppression device place and the final battle of episode 2. Ah striders just so good to fight.

The only one I can think of right now is the Mass Effect games (ok, so maybe not the last ten minutes of ME3, but I still felt badass throughout the rest of it).

Try the Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer. Not a lot is more bad-ass than a Drell/Asari Adapt owning shit up in Gold =D

Okami wins this pretty handily.
You are a spiritual wolf god-like entity that used to be an above normal wolf that helped kill the epitome of evil in the land, a few thousand years ago. Because the world is being fucked up again, you are revived and must go through the land with a paint brush that makes biblical powers look like nothing. You destroy demons by mauling them with your teeth and various weapons (which are also badass) and save the people of Japan a mystical land, by being generally badass.

Okami is one of the few games to make me D8

devil may cry 3. probably my favourite game of all time, and considering capcom wrote it, they didn't do a terrible job.

also infamous 2 had a fantastic ending, and i did feel like a badass spamming lightning missiles ^-^

Freespace... Don't think that anyone remembers this. Had the original one when I was about 8 years old and lost it. Years later I remembered the game but didn't know the title anymore until I stumbled upon it a few months ago. Downloaded it and started playing, I'm actually downloading the second one right now.

I know, it's old as fuck and it takes a long time to find a control scheme that works decently (I'd recommend a joystick) and the graphics...

But there are only few things that make you feel more badass than going into a fight with just 2 wings of fighters as support, finding yourself vastly outnumbered and outgunned and still manage to take down a shitload of enemy fighters and interceptors, destroy 2 heavy cruisers and escape with half of your men still alive.

Don't be mistaken though, this game is hard. I mean HARD! Even on very easy, you still have to watch your back since a single enemy that manages to get behind you unnoticed can wreck your shit with a few well placed shots and one or two lock-on missiles.

Most of the end-game stuff in Bioware RPG's.

Fighting through the Star Forge in KoTOR made me feel totally badass, especially so if I was playing dark side.

Running in through hordes of soldiers and Sith, and just cutting them down to visit bloody delicious vengeance on my former student? Hell yes!

I felt pretty badass as Adam Jensen in Deus Ex HR. Despite being a small pawn facing enemies that wield more power than most governments, I felt pretty good taking out soldiers with a little help from my awesome augmentations. Also, I looked pretty badass.

Arkham City. Being able to play as Batman is such an incredible game and to do things Batman can do felt amazing.

Why has no one mentioned the Dynasty Warriors games? What is wrong with you people?!

You are a one man fucking army killing hundreds left and right. And if you aren't killing/swinging you oversized weapon every second: You are playing in wrong!

Also Lu bu.
Especially when you consider what weapons have been used throughout the series to create these genocides.

Some of which includes:

A feather fan that shoot lasers.
A flute that creates purple orbs of DOOM!
A rapid firing arm cannon
A detachable, double halberd pinwheel...thing.
A giant, stone column + coconut tree minigun + giant poisonous mushroom combination
A harp
A wrist-mounted, rapid firing, bladed crossbow

And more...

And then there's the Samurai Warriors series...

Playing as that guy makes me feel like a real badass.

Half-life 2's final chapter, with the gravity gun, made me feel badass. Chucking people around and hurling them into electric stuff makes my day.

Vanquish hands down. Jetting around at ludicrous speeds before pulling the heavy rifle out and blasting a bad guys face in, in slow mo (overdone but still awesome) then taking a smoke break before punching the head off a giant mech
