Horror games. Im sorry, I do not see the appeal in purposely playing or watching something for the sole reason that it will scare you. Did I miss a memo somewhere that being afraid is no longer a negative emotion? I rather be laughing or excited.
While I do see your point, there's something primal and extremely engaging about being scared. Laughter or comedy in general still has this somewhat loose detachment from the media in question, there's just something about horror games that makes them so damned engaging and immersive when done right. Outlast is an example of it being done incredibly right. It's probably the reason why people skydive and bungee jump and shit. It's terrifying, you get a feeling like you might die, but it's such a rush and you get so much adrenaline from it that people come back for seconds.

As for my vote, RTS or 4X games. Lord knows I've tried (I try to play all genres from all around the world), but there comes a point where I feel like I'm at work when I just want to relax and let go. Then again, I haven't played favorites like Starcraft 2 or Company of Heroes so there still might be one for me.

I also no longer play Minecraft, as the fanboy flavoured folks around here ruined that for me. I was absolutely into Minecraft when it came into existence, but when the Minecraft zealots started using it to blow up our school system and replacing pretty much everything else with Minecraft, sex ed and Marx, party was over and things got so ugly I still think I should seek therapy before I cut a *****.
Uhh... what? Can you explain this I am curious to know what you are talking about but I cant decipher it from this.

OT: I do not like sports games.

Also the GTA games never really appealed to me. I don't have a problem with a game being about crimes, but the Gangster style of GTA never interested me. I really only got into the genre with Saints Row 3, and even then I could really only like Saints Row 2 because it was part of the series.

GTA V does change that because of the heist nature of the story, like I said I don't mind playing a game about being a criminal. Hell i would be all over Payday if I had more friends that were interested in it.

Other wise i find that there is little I don't like, or at least won't avoid before giving it a fair chance.

Oooh, I shy away from those newfangled MOBA games. Partially because I like persistence with my RPGs (or the Skinner Box doesn't work, goddamnit), and partially because the communities surrounding them seem to be invariably awful.

Uuuh, also zombie games. Just too many of them. Can't be arsed.
WWII games. I feel no historic connection to WWII, possibly because I'm a Kiwi. So the setting just doesn't interest me. That said, I might get Valkyria Chronicles when I get a Vita. Which is sort of the same thing, but anime. Crazy.

Oh, and horror games. Because I like sleeping :).

Plenty of things. Almost all MMO's, MOBAs, 4X games, rougelikes, Japanese games that aren't Armored Core or the Souls series (maybe Final Fantasy), and indie titles are amongst the stuff I refuse to touch.

Puzzle games in general, and sports games- If you think COD is repetitive. Anything Nintendo related unless It's like Sky Wind Sword or a game like Zombie-U.

Call of Duty.

I played Black Ops for an hour or two once, and it was really goddamned boring. Not to mention I don't have the reflexes necessary to actually perform better than godawful. I really hate shooters that think being killed in two shots is a good thing.

Grand Theft Auto never appealed to me. I have four GTA games and really haven't touched any of them.

I also have no interest at all in MOBAs and normal sports games (Tony Hawk and Quidditch World Cup were pretty good). Very little interest in MMOs, mainly due to the time/money commitment.

I'm not going to even attempt to play The Last of Us, Monster Hunter games or Dark/Demon's Souls, not after that hype. I did the same for Infinite, it was a crap experience. I did the same for MW2, Halo: Reach, Mirror's Edge.

Basically I hate buying games because of a desire to see whether the hype lives up to it (only occasionally doing it like with Infinite).
Meh, Infinite kind of sucked regardless of hype. The art direction was fantastic, but the narrative left a lot to be desired. The Last of Us atleast deserves a try, maybe borrow it or by it when it goes down in price. Most games don't live up to the hype though, so I understand your point.

Personally, I won't play MMO's. Period. I won't pay a monthly fee, and if it's free to play then even worse. I don't care how it's structured, I just don't care. Actually, this goes for any online multiplayer. I'll take the solitude of Silent Hill 2 over LOL or COD any day.

I'm basically with the OP, I need a story in order to care, even if it's somewhat average. There are exceptions, like strategy games, but for the most part I need a plot to carry me through the game. Otherwise the action gets boring real quick.

Anything that requires Steam authentication. Don't get me wrong i like Valve and most of what they do, and if we ever get Half Life 3 they can pretty much charge what they like for it and I would find a way to cough up. But I am fundamentally opposed to this kind of DRM on retail purchases, primarily because it means I can't trade in my game when I finish it, but also for the host of other reasons that gets pawed over. I am not so bothered when it comes to games I have actually purchased through Steam, after all its part of the service, and the trade-off you make when choosing a digial download (although i do where possible buy from GOG instead now, even if it costs a little more because I still don't like it). But when i have gone out and brought a disc, no, not ok.

DMC, the Devil may cry shadow. Everything about that game irritates me, the characters more than anything else.
You did the right thing. Its awful as a Devil May Cry game, mediocre at best, I still regret borrowing it.

So since I brought that up, every Capcom game that isn't Monster Hunter. If they make me pay for the same game one more time I will personally burn their main HQ to the ground and charge them full repair to have only half the building repaired. Ashes to ashes mother f*****s.

EA games, but thats too easy.
Special mention to MMO's and Minecraft. They just seem like a waste of time.
And LoL, game looks great but... that player base is the scum of the earth.

Yes, I know it's unfair. No doubt some of them are really good. Shadow of the Colossus was sweet, Dark Souls, for all my many many issues, did have a certain something and Vanquish could have been fun if not for a few crippling design flaws.

But for the most part I just see anime aesthetics, too-cool-for-school characters dressed like fucking rodeo clowns, horrendous dialogue (which, to be fair, might have something to do with translation) and horrible voice acting.

...

Yeah... I'm gonna make some friends with this post.

Same as this. Except from a few like Catherine, Souls games, Dragons Dogma or Capcom I won't play.
No problem with that all. May I suggest, however, playing older Japanese video games, from around the PS1, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, and PS2 era (less PS2). You will find plenty of gems out there that don't rely so much on typical anime cliches. Especially on the Sega Saturn.

Shenmue and Sega Rally, for instance.

I will agree that I've been getting turned off by Japanese games because of the increased emphasis on anime. However, I do think that for many genres, the Japanese are best when it comes to controls. I find a lot of Western games don't handle the same. This is mainly regarding more arcade orientated games though, which I suspect, you're not so interested in.

Sports games. I'll be honest, I don't like watching sports in general and simulating isn't much more invigorating. Sure, with family and friends it's tolerable (sometimes fun) but for the most part they just don't click with me.

I'm burnt out with MMOs. I like following Warcraft's story but I don't like killing 10 of the generic mob every day of the week to advance it.

Non-action horror games. Yes, I'm a scaredy cat.

Sports games. Screw sports games. Sports are boring, and sports games are for people who only like sports and cant relate to anything else so they compromise with stupid boring sports games.

Also fighting games. I can't stand fighting games, they're so boring; you either play optimally and defeat the opponent or you don't. There's no room to deviate or mix it up or have fun with it without learning a new fighter and working for it. You either play it the right way or get out. That's a lot of work I have to put in for a game I hate anyway.

MOBAs like LoL and dota. They seem really rage-worthy. I can handle a bad community most of the time, and even cynically appreciate the unique trolly comedy of a hyper-rude atmosphere, but if you're doing badly you're undoubtedly dragging the whole team down which is a lot of pressure, and having hate directed at you specifically for my performance isn't as fun because how well I perform is pretty important to me. I really hate the feeling of not knowing what I'm doing, and coupled with pressure to perform is what created some poor experiences with DOTA I had waaaaaay back in the day with Warcraft 3. Monday Night Combat and Super Monday Night Combat were okay because they were shooters. I suspect though if I took the time to actually learn LoL or DOTA I might like them.

But now that I think about it, I like most types of games. I play MMOs, RPGs, definitely FPSs, RTS, sandbox, arcade, platformer, racing, and I will play multiplayer. Maybe this is why I never get out 0.o halp plz

World of Warcraft, and by extension all MMOs because MMO developers keep trying to copying World of Warcraft. Subscription based games too, which ties into the World of Warcraft thing above.

I also cannot stand Pay2Win games, with a very broad definition of Pay2Win. Pretty much the only F2P games I can play are Valve games because of it.

Oh, and I also can't get into MOBAs no matter how hard I try. But that's less "I just won't play" and more "I tried, I just couldn't".

all sports games, i dont give two shits about sports. in my eyes its just a bunch of humans hitting a ball. . .

and war themed games. i despise war, the guns, the soldiers, the tanks, the explosions, the waste of it all. its so barbaric and primitive. in game and real in life. in my eyes i just see a mass of humans killing for the sake of it.

yah, if only the human race would concentrate they're entertainment and world dominance with positive intellectual science, this world would be a better place. but no, as monkeys we like killing each other and hitting leather balls.

Games or types of games I won't play at all. Honestly, none. If I can get access to a game through a friend, family or such I'll give it a try.

Games I wouldn't pay money for:

Most games that are meant as MP FPS (I'm just not really good at them and I hate holding the team back).

Subscription based MMOs... also not good enough at them, nor do I play them often enough to justify the subscription. Though to be fair Star Trek Online is one of my favorite games.

Non-simulation Sports Games (Like Madden and such. I'm not a fan of having to control players) though their strategy based counterparts are awesome.

Racing games outside of things like Mario Kart because I just suck at them and they lose their appeal quicker than I can get good at them.

Final Fantasy games because I am not a fan of where they went. Other JRPGs get judged on a game by game basis.

I have to say that this is the first time I've seen someone getting worked up over tarot cards.

I guess you either love or hate firetrucks alot?

At the end of the day games need to make money so the devs can keep on making them so I see marketing more as a necessary evil. As long as it has no impact on the final product (as in designing the game itself to be more marketable) than I don't see any problems with it.

Back to topic- MMOs arejust about the only game I won't pay. I just don't like having to pay a monthly subscription and the ones that don't usually have horrendous micro-transaction.

And the grinding man. Work is a grind as it is, don't need to have that in my leisure time.

That and games that are outright clones of other games. There are just so many variants of Shariki-based smartphones games à la Puzzles and Dragons it's ridiculous. Throwing a new skin over a game doesn't make it yours, guys, as much as you wanna make a quick buck...

Infinite and me don't get along, bored me to death, though I probably worded my sentence to make it sound like I didn't play it. Luckily I can avoid The Last of Us 'cause I'm going to have to try it at a friend's house with a PS3 and TLoU, so it'd take a while to even look at it properly physically.

Then I was late to the Xbox 360 party and everybody was playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare but by that point the setting was no longer interesting to me. I never played it, nor any of the sequels. I suspect I may have done if the friend I played on the Xbox the most with was into it, but they weren't terribly excited by the multiplayer and we had Halo 3.
You missed out on one hell of a single-player though. And that's coming from someone who's not the biggest fan of FPS's, and who rather dislikes multi-player FPS's.

You should play it for the 'All Ghillied Up' level alone. Freaking genuis!

I don't get Minecraft, like I just genuinely do not get the appeal. Maybe it is because I live with my girlfriend, work 4 days a week on top of university and simply don't have time for a game that just seems like a time-sink.

To be honest I would rather play with Lego!
