Most of my Steam sale buys are gambles, hence why I buy them during a Steam Sale.

I would have to say Borderlands is my biggest gamble. It really is a FPS/Diablo style looter, something I didn't think would work but it does.

Tiny and Big: Grandpa's leftovers.

Needless to say, it had a major problem which I didn't expect it to have.
It didn't work.
My graphics card apparently wasn't good enough.
Although, since I have 2, I suspect it was reading the wrong one. (I can play Metro 2033 on high)

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

The only reason I got it was because I played as Ike and Marth quite a bit in Super Smash Bros Brawl and wanted to see what one of their games was like.

Needless to say, it was worth it.

Good Gamble: Lego Batman 2. I'd never played a Lego game before, and this one was pleasantly surprising.

Bad Gamble: Dragonball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi. Granted, it makes for a rather exciting game of rock paper scissors, but doesn't really hold up as a fun anime fighting game. Traded it in for Raging Blast 2, which I'm much happier with.

Bad Gambles; Corporation (shitty ass FPS on the Megadrive), Outcast, Shadow of the Beast 2.

Good gambles: Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Deus Ex: HR, Lego: Star Wars

Currently gambling: Borderlands & Red Faction: Guerrilla (just bought via Steam summer sale)

Bad gambles: Brink, Homefront, Mass Effect 3 (never been trolled so hard before...), Crysis 2, I bought it for xbox (1st mistake), then I beat it and was so confused I had to wikipedia the entire story to understand what hell was going on.

Games I took a gamble on?

All my gameboy advance and lower games. All my NES games. All my N64 games. All my PS1 games. Some of my Gamecube games.

Since I got internet though:
Tales of Vesperia. (Awesome game. Didn't get to play it enough.)
The Witcher. (Awesome idea, still flawed, but didn't regret it.)
Final Fantasy 10. (Not my game...it was good but I just didn't like it.)
Guild Wars. (Lost interest too quickly.)

Probably more but I can't think of others atm.

I bought Kingdom Hearts after seeing the trailer, and it turned out to be a decent buy. I also bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution on a whim, with no reviews or nothing. That, too, turned up to be a good deal.
Other such games include Tomba 2, Vagrant Story and Alpha Protocol.

Bad buys... Well, those are few and far between, but there are a couple of titles I grabbed on a moment's notice. The most recent one would be Operation: Raccoon City. The PlayStation Store had it at a 4.85 or something, and even though I know not to trust these numbers I still went on ahead and bought the damn thing. Worst money I've spent in a while, at least for now. I still might get into it later, and find out it's a decent title after the awful first mission.

Septerra Core, Psi-Ops, Dynasty Warriors 2, The Club, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Jet Set Radio Future, Mass Effect (it was brand new, no one I knew had played it, and I had no net).

Mass Effect here to, knew nothing about it, turned out to be one of my all time favorites, also Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (I was into vampires back then reading anne Rice and all that) bought it fell in love with the games, the lore, the characters.

Much respect to anyone who ever seriously stepped onto the Dance Dance Revolution pad. Even if you failed out and never played again, you took the chance. Hail!

Best Gamble:
Anomaly Warzone Earth - Who knew playing the opposite end of a tower defense game would be just as fun.
Rock of Ages

Good Gamble:
Puzzle Dimension
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
Dustforce

Bad Gamble:
Nexuiz
Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals - I was misled by a certain review to believe that this was not your average point and click adventure game.
Killing Floor

Worst Gamble:
Alpha Protocol - I knew going in that this was bad but was swayed just for once by the vocal minority. I regret ever listening.

Henry Hatsworth in The Puzzling Adventure for the DS.

Sound obscure? It was. And it was a great game.

Bioshock, one day I saw it on the shelf for $20 and decided to buy it only going off some positive word of mouth I've heard about the game and a demo I played at a friends house a year or so earlier. As you can see by my big daddy badge it was a very good gamble.

I remember a lot of people saying Mirror's Edge was going to be bad because it didn't focus on shooting, but was in first person. I didn't know that parkour was it's main feature, and I never bothered to look up the trailers. My mate at the time told me it was shit, so I bought it just to spit him. Years later, we both still enjoy the game, and fucking rage that it hasn't had a sequel. With open world. And a map editor.

I gambled on Metro 2033. I more than won on that one.

And considering how I hate similar games such as Half Life 2, I was surprised that I did.

Cemented my love for the lore, and has ensured Last Light will be a day one purchase. Perhaps even a limited edition should one come out near me.

Bad gamble; Call of Duty 4.

I listened to the hype, and I got it on release. And it was one of the worst gaming experiences I'd ever had. I'm serious. Awful from start to finish. The campaign was mediocre, and looking back, I can hardly recall even the slightest detail about it, but the multiplayer was broken, rewarding me for nothing, and punishing me with instant death for the crime of... Well, nothing. I died all of the time, every time, from someone I couldn't see, or from a grenade, or a helicopter, or anything and everything really.

I even came back later, and found it to be just as bad as before.

And for my final gamble, Call of Duty: World at War.

Great gamble. High stakes gamble, after the nightmare that was my time on CoD4. In fact, I put it off for about two years before I played it, as I remembered the terrible time I had in the previous game.

Boy, am I glad I did pick it up. Treyarch just did it better than Infinity War in my opinion. For starters, I felt the multiplayer, while similar, was just more balanced. Yes, there were some broken layouts, but they never gave me that much trouble.

Really though, I think the emphasis on single shot, semi-automatic and bolt action rifles made me like it. The Gewehr remains my favorite gun from any Call of Duty, and more than likely will never be topped.

I just got a better time out of WaW, and still find Treyarch to outdo Infinity Ward at every game. Made me hate CoD4 even more for scaring me away from what would come to be one of my favorite FPS games of all time. Pity it's now either empty or hacked to high hell and back. I miss my Gewehr.
