Games with a great atmosphere.

The dread that comes from watching your squadmates die one-by-one, witnessing the Covenant mercilessly beat civilians to death, flying from rooftop to rooftop in your Falcon as Covenant Cruisers glass the city around you as you desperately attempt to save as many as you possibly can, with the knowledge that regardless of what you do, the planet will fall, and most of the population will be slaughtered, yourself included.

The final battle was an especially powerful scene, especially when you consider what your final objective objective is.

There was no dread. The lack of proper writing and narration to instill said dread into the player made it all feel utterly pointless. But as I said. I liked the smurfs when I was a kid. Sometimes thought they were scary too.

Really? You're being condescending to me when I've done nothing to offend you? You know, it's kind of difficult to accuse someone else of being a child when you're the only one throwing around insults and accusations without reason, regardless of how well you attempt to hide said insults and accusations.

My opinion is different from yours, I found the game immersive and well-written, that doesn't mean you have to be rude to me about it, especially considering that I, once again, said nothing offensive towards you regarding your own opinion on the game.

Really, is there any particular reason people feel the need to berate others for not sharing their opinion on something? Especially something so trivial? How does my liking the game's story negatively affect you in such a way that you feel justified in insulting me?

Metroid Prime.

The Environment, Gameplay, Creatures, and Music all create a truly amazing Atsmophere.
For me at least.

Also, Alan Wake is impressive.
The Saboteur - I liked the general feeling.

Metro:2033 was very good.

Borderlands, that little twang in the background as you walked into a twon with a smoking combat rifle on your back. You could just walk into a bar and act all mysterious like an anime.
Amnesia the dark decent, that almost made me piss my pants on several occasions.

Condemned, they picked excellent locations to be scary.

I would say Alan Wake but I have yet to play it Monies.

and also two total surprise cards, but you can't deny they don't have a great atmosphere. At least they do in my books:

Not berating you. Just speaking from my experience. I used to think things are well written and whatnot too, before I realized with shock that I had just not been paying enough attention. Much as I enjoy Halo: Reach.. it's not a masterpiece when it comes to writing and narration. It's a very poor excuse for "atmosphere". The trailers were in a different league altogether--now those raised a few goosebumps. The game.. not so much.

I suppose I might stand right in my assumption that you generally adore Halo. In that case I understand. Sort of.

As I said. No berating. Just comparing writing with writing and coming to the conclusion that Halo: Reach (the Game, not talking about the book) is making due somewhere at the bottom of the food chain.

Not really much of a game, since it involves a version of Little Red Riding Hood wandering around and finding clues until you find your wolf and go to grandma's house. The woods are amazing and have a surreal, dreamlike feel. The woodsman scenes with the various wolves are deliciously disturbing as you to try to make sense of it from your current character's eyes. The clues to the story are done with striking images and flashes of memory.

So much this. Although it gets lost after the hospital, but comes back in the forest. Especially the Silent Hill-ish mansion.

I just finished the mission 'heavy rain' or something of that nature on L4D2 so I can confidently say that that game has a great atmosphere.

Gee I hate to sound like a fanboi that keeps bringing up this game, but: Yume Nikki.

It's just amazing. The music is simple but memorable and appropriate, the "enemies" and environments bizarre, has a story that can have so many different interpretations, WTF crap-your-pants moments, and a striking ending.

And it's free to download, so none of you have an excuse not to play.
