After going through the atrocity that is Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boss fights, it got me thinking of what games had kickass boss battles.

Shadow of The Colossus is a no-brainer.

Here are some games in my opinion have awesome boss battles.

The Pokemon Series
Legend of Zelda Series
Paper Mario 64
Tales of Symphonia
Outland
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

what are some games with great boss battles?

I recall a battle in Metal Gear Solid 4 where I was being hunted by a wolf battle-suit and a bunch of soldiers through a snowy landscape dotted with derelict iron towers.

I hated that game, but that encounter (like the rest of the ones for the Beauties) is still stuck in my mind as some great design.

The Devil May Cry series has a tradition of great boss battles. The fights against Griffon in the first game, The Despair Embodied and Possessed Arius in the second, Vergil and Agni/Rudra in the third, and...well, basically every boss Nero can fight in the fourth (the special buster attacks are awesome), are some of my favorites.

God Hand had a few great ones, as well, though I looked forward to the fights against the Mad Midget Five and Azel most.

Really, though, first boss battle that really got my blood pumping? The <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPZgJ_E5ESw>Nasty Gatekeeper in Dynamite Headdy.

The God of War series had some pretty nice boss battles. Bosses should be huge. It gives the game a feeling of epicness.

JRPGs in general have the best boss battles. They are epic, long, and the bosses are huge.

Persona 4 really stands out because of it's large diversity of enemies. Mainly in the looks department.

MGS had some of the best bosses I've faced to this day. To Sniper Wolf from Ocelot they'll always be dear to my hear when it comes to bosses.

World of Warcraft!

But if we're talking about single-player only, Bayonetta would probably have to be my favorite. Totally totally absurd fun in the best way possible.

Ninja'd but yeah probably God Of War.

Other than that.... KOTOR... Dragon Age:Origins(probably the coolest because of the finishing moves)

Katawa Shoujo has like, the hardest battle ever.

Try romancing Rin. Shes like the One Winged Angel of visual novels.

Oh, and Monster Hunter. Almost every fight is a boss fight. You ever tango with a Barioth? How about The Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos? Monster Hunter has bosses you actively FEAR.

MGS3 easily qualifies as well. Even if The End was the only good boss fight in the game I'd say it deserved to be mentioned as one of the best games for boss fights ever. As much as I loved the MGS1 boss battles, nothing touches that sniper duel. The fact that the game is filled with even more great boss battles as well is just icing.

Ninja'd

Also, Shadow of the Colossus is a chain of boss fights (which you already mentioned). Both games are pretty epic.

The Pokemon Series
Ninja'd by OP. Um, the bosses from Super Mario RPG are interesting. I always liked the SNES Final Fantasy bosses too. Oh and the original Star Fox bosses were challenging!

Want a game that is very, very, very hard with bosses? Streets of Simcity. There are missions I've been trying to beat from when I first got the game until now that I can't beat because the bosses just won't die!

Kefka in FF6 , a boss battle where you could go against him with you ENTIRE cast of characters . He had three phases. You line your characters from first to last , and everytime on character dies well he gets replaced by next in line . For say your first four was , terry, cyan , sabin and setzer , and cyan died for whateve reason during the boss battle , he would get replaced by let's say , locke , if he was 5th in line and so on and so forth. Really awsome concept for a boss, plus the music was epic.

Painkiller. What REALLY sticks out in my mind is the battle against Guardian. Keep in mind, this was the firs game EVER to incorporate the Havok physics engine.

And when you're fighting a three-story behemoth who has a GIANT HAMMER in a set of runs constructed entirely of stone blocks just SITTING on top of each other?

I have an entire custom soundtrack JUST for that battle.

Well the MGS series is known for having awesome boss fights.

MGS3 in particular has you fighting a 100 year old sniper called The End. You fight him in a large forest that spans three areas. It's a game of cat and mouse as you look for him while at the same time making sure he doesn't see you. The lack of music also adds to the mood and atmosphere to the fight. Brilliantly designed fight that was.

Dark Souls, Metroid Prime, God Hand and No More Heroes are the first games that come to mind. Metroid Prime has Meta Ridley, No More Heroes and God Hand both have awesomely bizarre and mechanically fun bosses, Dark Souls is obvious. Tales of Symphonia was also mentioned, for good reasons(Abyssion <3).

Oh, and Painkiller.

Viewtiful Joe and No More Heroes.
I like the whole dual aspect of a boss battle and what make it even more great is the boss music for that perticular boss! (E.g Themes to Destory Man, Henry, Fire Leo, Alastor and Another Joe etc.)

No More Heroes and NMH 2 had some AWESOME bosses, like Alice Twilight, Dr Letz Shake and Mr Sir Henry Motherf***er. But there are some pretty bad ones too, such as Jasper Batt Jr.
