Two games I can name right away. CustomRobo for the Gamecube, and Phantom Dust, for the Xbox. Both games boasted an immersive, deep story, with twists and turns. An overall great experience, and the multiplayer was excellent as well. It was easy to pick up if you were just learning, and different strategies were discovered all the time. What games do you consider to have both good Single and Multiplayer?
