Hey all: Forgive me for being a neophyte. I'm trying to categorize games. What is the industry name for games without boards, such as card games and Pictionary, et al? Is it "TableTop Game?" "Party Game?" How does the gaming community refer to them? Consumers? It it necessary for a board game to actually have a "board" in oder to be called a "board game?" I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks all!

Hello, rehiggins99! Welcome to The Escapist forums!

I feel table top games covers board games, card games, pen and paper RPGs, etc. Pretty much any game one can play where the interactions occur primarily on a planar surface in person as opposed to a special court for most sports or a computational device like a PC, console, or mobile device.

It seems appropriate to only call games that are played on a board to be called a board game, the same way Magic: The Gathering is not called a board game despite the fact players can use a card mat to organize their cards and Risk is not a card game despite its use of cards.
