WoW has a story, sure it isn't a individual characters story but lore, land, history, races and all that crap nobody gives two craps about.
I think the components you are describing are what we call a 'setting'.

there are almost no games that have "no story whatsoever"... almost all of them have some story, either concocted by the game developers themselves, or implanted by the players themselves.

Final Fantasy x-2 did have a story, but in order to understand the whole thing you had to give it multiple playthroughs, to get 100% and unlock the story portion pertaining to Tidus.
Kinda. It all means nothing if you don't press square in the 30 seconds you have to run around in the farplane in chapter 3. There are no hints as to what you have to do, no retries (short of reloading it or replaying the entire game), and only incredibly impersonal references. The only direct references are in the opening (forgettable after reloading Sphere Break for the hundreth shitting time), the scene after the first mission (forgettable for same and because you can skip it), and a missable scene in chapter 2. Further, if you don't do that chapter 3 thing, they never really mention him again. I'm more inclined to call it an unlockable scene.

Since I've posted here again, Road Rash 3 has no story. At all. Just races and setting (and characters that really don't matter).

It still had that underlying main story about Shuyin and that dancer chick, and the massive weapon (which i've forgotten the name of) about to blow up all of Spira.

Underlying main story? Isn't that a little contradictory?

It was Vegnagun, and chapter 3 again. You don't know who Shuyin is til chapter 3, and though the name 'Vegnagun' gets dropped in chapter 2, it disappears and is not mentioned again til 4, around the time you first hear of Lenne. Considering that, Sphere Break aside, nothing in chapters 3 through 5 is very time-consuming (all of the requisite JRPG grind is chapter 2), it's easily half the game where they don't even know the planet is going to be blown up, much less by whom or with what.

Uhh...I don't think that the old Golden Axe games had a story. The new one didn't either, about 2.5 hours in, but I have no idea how long it is. Burnout Paradise sure didn't.

I thought Shadow of the Colossus was lacking in story.
It just took a different approach, Shadow of the Colossus required you to put together the story as you saw it, brilliant in it's own way.

Seconded! Although I didn't think Prototype's story was that great.

Burnout Paradise. It's story is "Here is a city. Here is a car. Go ramp off stuff."
Still a fun game though.

Agreed, it was riddled with cliche and plot-holes, but nevertheless, it had a story, I mean for god's sake, it had an entire game option to pursue the story further by brain-eating. This guy is just a blatant troll.

Serious sam the first encounter had no story. Something about Sam being sent back in time but there is no clear objective or reason as to why you're there. However this is forgotten in the moments when the undead are attempting to rip your head off and you just start having fun.

Hellgate London had virtually no story. Still, a lot of fun to wade through demons doom style.

Definitely. He's clearly never played any of these games, or maybe he just skipped all the cutscenes because he's one of those foam at the mouth and lapse into a coma if he doesnt kill something for 3 seconds gamers so he missed it all, because thats just ridiculous.

Also I'm sure its been said plenty of times but the old id games like Quake and Doom had no story at all. But thats the fun of them, you just shoot things and its awesome without the need of some big epic plot twist or whatever.

Half life 2? I have no idea what the fuck is going on, people just seem so excited to have GOrdan around and then just assume that in my greatness I already know everything. Plus since there are no cut scenes I start to zone out then miss whatever is being said
Get out.

Final Fantasy XII had a story, but it was so convoluted (even for a JRPG) and the charcters seemed to not want you to get to know them or develop it basically reduces the game to one huge shade of grey with a soundtrack of 50 'Mehs'. So that's my vote.

Overlord 1 (And possibly 2).

Well, yes, Overlord 1 does have a story but it's more like it was just interjected at the end. Until then it's more or less:

Follow the yellow railroad of pain.

Edit: Overlord 2 is sort of like that but it's story is more like "Take over zi world! Oh... There are other evil forces in the way as well."

Damn, Overlord needs a sandbox mod...
