Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

I liked the story, but the gameplay was so bland that I could barely keep playing, but I wanted to see if the characters evolved any through the storyline...

I made it to the end, and was relatively close to Platinuming it, but just thinking about having to replay the chase scenes made me just hit eject and put it into it's mailer envelope.

Let's see... I couldn't think of many until I read the existing posts.

Time Shift was one, I admit, I'm a sucker for slow-time mechanics, especially if I can cheat and make it infinite. I got the game for PC for precisely that reason, but never was able to find a good trainer.

Borderlands. Alone. So alone.

Aside from those, I don't have much patience for games I don't enjoy. My game time is limited these days, and I don't want to waste it *not* having fun. Also Gamefly is a godsend for these things. If I rent a shitty game, I just pack it up and send it back. The last time I bought a game without playing it first was Final Fantasy 13. That will be the last time I ever buy a game on good faith alone. I thought I would buy the new Assassins Creed, but after seeing the reviews, I'm going to give it a rent.

Resident Evil 4, just so the fanboys couldn't tell me I had no right to criticize the game because I didn't finish it. That's the sort of crap they try to hide behind all the time.

Before that there was Borderlands, which I honestly couldn't tell you why I finished. The whole thing bored me to tears from start to finish. Bland guns, bland bad guys, a bland story that's blandly told and - dare I say it - bland art style. And all for what is possibly the worst ending to a game I've ever seen.
I cannot tell you how many times I've tried finishing that game. Apparently it's way better with friends, but I just can't get my head around it. I want to love that game, but it's so boring.. everything is so repetitive.

But as far as games I finished that I didn't want to... Fallout New Vegas.. I loved the game, and although you could select several paths for the endgame.. I found joining any one of them to be less than rewarding.. I also felt like the game was kindof empty. Too much space, not enough stuff in between.

Modern Warfare 3. Bored all the way through, I just wanted to see how the story ended. It's not like it was long or anything.

By the time I neared the end of the first Assassin's Creed I was so sick of it that I was prepared to stick the CD down the garbage disposal and set fire to the box and manual just so I wouldn't ever have to clap eyes on the damn thing.
However, I have a complex known as "Achievement Dependency" so I managed to slog my way through the rest of the game with ibuprofen in one hand and a puke pail in the other hand...and the controller in, somehow, a third hand.

Darkwatch. My thoughts on this game are well-published, so i won;t go into them here.

Force Unleashed. I kept that game around for when I felt like being angry.

Kingdom Hearts Fraction Adventures. I have never played such a badly-designed shitty piec of garbage. I hate it in every facet of its existence. I hate its monkey-shit-on-a-keyboard gameplay, I hate its uniformly awful additions to the Kingdom Hearts story, I hate how long and difficult it is the beat some missions because either you cant kill the monster in less than 20 minutes thanks to the shitty damage tables, or because the terrible controls make it impossible to defend yourself in any real way, or both

most of all, i hate it for the promise it made of being a fun, portable kingdom hearts game.

it was portable, and had the kingdom hearts sticker over the front.
Those are the only nice things I can say about it

I don't think i've ever finished a game I didn't like. Sure i've grinded my way through various pokemon games leveling them up and such to face off the elite 4 (or equivilent) but i still enjoyed it for the most part.

If its a game I don't like I just give up on it. Why would I waste my time on something thats supposed to entertain me if it just does the opposite?

The bigger question for me is why do I have several games that I like still unfinished and collecting dust?

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded - Normally I stop playing when the fun runs out, but since Gamestop gives it's employees four days with any game, I knuckled down and kept at it even when it got very frustrating and honestly disappointing. If you get this game - The mission objective says Deal With [Redacted], but what they mean is shoot him in his stupid invincible face a few times, kill all the guards, kill more guards, shoot his face, kill guards, dodge helicopter, hear "Goldeneye charged to 90%" then run to an elevator and go shut the thing off. Yes, this is what you really do.

Fable 3 - Fucking hell. It's really a bad sign when the embodiment of ultimate evil shows up and I still would rather shoot Reaver in his smug, never-aging asshole face. Traded it in with no regrets.

I think it really helps to be a film enthusiast to appreciate what Assassins Creed 2 did. The opening cinematic after you beat up a bunch of people on the Ponte Vecchio was brilliant. The lines, "It is a good life we lead, brother."; "The best. May it never change."; "And may it never change us." always sends chills down my spine. What the game did better than the first Assassin's Creed is almost everything, but mostly character progression in the story. It helps to appreciate the finer points of cinematography and character development to like the game.

Should that be necessary to like the game? Absolutely not. The problem with Assasssins Creed 2 is that it was aiming for an "interactive movie" rather than an all out fun video game. From a film enthusiasts point of view, it's definitely one of the best games ever made, but from a consumer point of view, not so much.

Also, it helps that my girlfriend is Italian and we play it with Italian as the spoken language.
You see, this is what makes me feel like I'm crazy. Or someone is crazy, at least. What is it about the character development you liked? Because in my mind Ezio's arc goes from irresponsible, self-centered, womaniser to irresponsible, self-centered, womanising, vengance-filled murderer and then the only development past that is he just gets stupider and stupider as the plot progresses.

The problem I see with Assassins Creed 2 is that after the complaints about AC1 not having enough variety Ubisoft said "Oh, we can do variety" and then completely trashed everything else in their attempts to do so. It's pretty clear that they developed the set-pieces first and built the rest of the game around stringing them together.

Metal Gear Solid, the original one. I enjoyed it all the way up to the Rex fight. from there onwards I just hated it... At least I found out Snake's name is actually Dave! :D

AC 1. I just felt like I had to do the same thing over and over 9 times and then the end of the game. That, and I didn't like the cutscene better look thing mechanic. But I did all of them, for the achievement *hangs head in shame*

Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. Some people find it weird that I like the first Assassin's Creed but not the sequels, but it's because they're completely different games in my eyes. Instead of improving on a good-but-flawed game, they threw out everything but the control scheme and the dumbest parts of the plot. Instead of a semi-realistic look at history through the eyes of an Assassin, we're using flying machines, stopping sword strikes with our wrists and climbing up buildings like Spiderman on crack (despite wearing three layers of clothing.)

That, and the story is about as badly told as it gets. With so many arbitrary leaps forward in time, so many characters coming and going and so many names being tossed around, I got lost about half-way through and stayed in the dark 'til the end.

Dead Space for me, and I honestly felt massively let down by it. A friend recommended me it and lent it, going on how it was extremely scary and had a brilliant story line.

I played through it and I didn't jump or feel scared once. Tell a lie... without a spoiler for those who haven't played it but the final cut scene at the end of the game. Good job Dead Space...

I also failed to experience this brilliant story I was told about, although that COULD have just been me as I had just finished playing ME1 & 2 through and went straight onto Dead Space so maybe my story expectations were too high.

In the end I only finished it as the gamer score was generous and I will admit that killing the various aliens in different styles managed to stay just about entertaining enough for me to finish the game off. You don't need to use any other weapon than the Plasma Cutter (or whatever it was called) once you've got it upgraded though which made the weapon system irrelevant.
