I'm sometimes...well, "ashamed" isn't really the right word, but I often avoid mentioning that I love Call of Duty 4. More than just liking it, it is, to me, one of the standout experiences of the 7th gen.
Thing is, I'm usually surrounded by people who don't like CoD and don't even know much about the series as a whole, they just see it for what it has become since MW2. So, when people bash CoD as a whole, I feel compelled to defend CoD4. And when I say that CoD4 is actually an excellent game, I will sometimes get a funny look; I then have to explain that, "No, really, the first Modern Warfare has a legit story with interesting and believable characters and it uses the medium and genre to do really interesting things with the narrative. It explores themes about the delicate nature of safety/security in a world where WMDs exist and actually gave me interesting things to think about regarding modern-day guerrilla warfare." Sometimes they believe me, sometimes they don't.
On another front, when I bring up to CoD fans that I loved CoD4 but don't care for the series going forward from there, they look at me like I'm crazy and tell me that MW2 was a so much better. They are usually saying that for the sake of the multiplayer. [I also think that MW1 was better on the multiplayer front, but that's another issue altogether] This then invokes the "campaign focus vs. multiplayer focus" discussion, and the CoD fans usually won't accept "Single-player is more important to me; multiplayer is more important to you; let's just leave it at that." They inevitably tell me that I should play the current CoD multiplayer and when I say I'm not interested they say that the only reason I'm not interested is because I must suck at the game. Seriously, I've met exactly two CoD fans who don't act like this. Stereotyping of CoD fans is unfair, sure, but anecdotal evidence has shown me that most fans live up to the stereotype.
Anyway...
The whole conversation surrounding my appreciation for CoD4 is usually more of a pain than its worth, so I usually don't bother bringing up that I love the game. That's not really "shame," per se, but I think it's relevant to this thread.
