A sidescrolling shooter on the PSone, you're piloting this awesome fighter which can pick up cool weapons like gatling guns, shotguns, missile launchers, a FREAKIN lightsaber and moree!!! to destroy enemy robots and shiz. When i talk about it no one seems to know what it is....one thought it was a porn movie...hahahaha
wow I just posted about that.
You aren't alone.

...did they seriously think anyone could go through the game without losing 1 life in order to get that secret fighter? that's just ridiculous

Dante's Inferno. Why the Hell does nobody like this game. I -love- this game! It's so over the top, but so wonderfully designed at the same time. It really is like adventuring through an old Hieronymous Bosch painting or something, though that's to the credit of Mr. Barlowe, I suppose.

Persona4. I was the first of my friends and family to get this game, before this none of them had ever heard of Persona or SMT at all. I discovered it from a small, favorable review in Game Informer and decided to give it a try. To put it concisely, I loved it, my brother and cousins loved it, I let my friends borrow it, and they loved it. True, it's JRPG in the strictest sense of the phrase, so if you're not into that, this game may not change your mind, but it's at least worth a look.

Alan Wake because no one bought it, i hear the sales figures weren't too good...
Also story driven games likes Bioshock and Singularity. Sure people bought Bioshock, but most of my friends didn't and many people i've spoke to found it too slow and boring. Oh well, their loss :)

Insurgency.
Seriously, I haven't seen anyone in an Australian server in so long.

Space Station Silicon Valley was a game for the N64 that I consider the precursor to GTA (Body Harvest could also be considered this) and was about a microchip from a crashed spaceship that could possess the bodies of dead animals to solve puzzles. and it was awesome but for some reason not even game collectors seem to know about this one.

Well, I hate it because my Dante is not a Florentine crusader, but a poet from Florence.

Oh, I loved space station silicon valley! Especially the fish level. That one was always my favourite, along with the shooting safari one. I am surprised someone else knows of it. I should go dig my old cartridge up...

Terranigma for the SNES. It does have a very small following, but only being released in Japan and Europe near the end of a console's lifespan doesn't help...

I'll mention Rez because that game deserves as much love as it can get.

There's a number of Final Fantasy games that get quite a bit of undeserved hate. FFV, FF Tactics, every FF Crystal Chronicles game... What about that Japan-only TRPG, Bahamut Lagoon? Don't tell me I'm the only one who's played it?

I also would've said Okami if not for the HUGE boom in popularity in the past couple years and the inevitable sequel that was made.

Some one mentioned Secret of Mana, but I'm going to throw in Secret of Evermore which I consider to be vastly superior (except the lack of multiplayer, WTF?).
Hell yeah. I never got far into into it, but it was an impressive game.

Vagrant Story. That game is either loved for it's complexity or hated because of it's downright bizarre weapon system. It's one of my very favorites.
Oh love. I really want to try out that game, but it's a rare find and it's only on PSN in Europe. :<

If you have a PS2/3 and haven't played Ico, you really should. One of the most beautiful and moving games ever made - it just lacked mainstream appeal.
Frankly, the game is a hard find, and if you live in North America it's even worse due to butchered content... Luckily it's being released on PS3, so I'll finally get a chance to play it. I loved SotC. :D

While they are popular I get eyerolls and sexist comments for playing Okami, Pikmin, and Sims3, since apparently only girls and 12-and-under boys play those games.
You had me until the Sims. Yes, only females and boys who are girls on the inside play that. Unfortunately, I cannot claim to be any better, I was a fiend for Quidditch on the game cube. =)It was such a genuinely fun game, especially if you are a HP nerd.
Sexist comments just like this. How exactly is the Sims just for girls and girl wannabes? Particularly with the massive amount of code-savvy users who hack it from here to the moon; last I checked programming skills were a stereotypical male thing. Plus you can fight mummies and either reduce them to ash or die from their curse, generally be Indiana Jones and go robbing tombs, have a mad inventor who creates an army of mechanical men... again, stereotypical male things.

You should go back and try it if you can. I recently did, and it's aged amazingly well if you don't care about 2D games (I'd question your status as a gamer if you did). The graphics are nice, and the dialogue is great because of how it was made by SquareUSA instead of Squaresoft. No translation issues at all.

Also, growing up in the 90's as I did, there are a few subtle pop culture references that I don't think many would get now. There is a "Doughead Software" store you pass by that's an obvious parody of Egghead Software. The same Egghead that if I'm not mistaken is now known as Newegg.com (Too lazy to verify. I do know they closed their stores about 10+ years ago to go online only).

Psychonauts is by far and away the biggest example of this phenomenon for me.

I think the stagnation in gaming is actually kind of healthy, or at least is the way I like it -- while the biggest games from the biggest publishers are pretty much facsimiles of one another exhibiting gameplay concepts from a decade ago, all kind of weird and wonderful ideas can exist supported by these sure-thing titles.

I don't want to be forced to understand and like something new and culturally challenging, and I'm quite happy for console bashing retards to fund my favourite developers by repeatedly buying the same game with slightly shinier graphics.
