The statement for the title, I hope, is obvious. But I wanted to give what really pushed me over the edge today. Also, I present this as only one evidence out of quite a few....
CAUTION: FAR CRY 2 SPOILERS ABOUND!
So, I was playing Far Cry 2 today and I was really thinking "wow, this actually has a pretty unique storyline and the Jackal character is really complex." But while I was playing, I remembered Gamespot saying something about a weak story. I went back and read the review again and I smacked my head with my hand in the most epic facepalm imaginable.
Let me first get out of the way why I think Far Cry 2 has an insanely good plot. First off, you're looking for a villain who armed both evil sides in this African civil war. It's pretty cut-clean in the beginning that you're trying to kill someone bad. But when the big reveal comes around, you figure out that you've been helping the Jackal all along.
And then the second big reveal comes around... the Jackal is actually the good guy. Everything you thought about the game before is changed.
And then there are some pretty awesome references to Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'. I mean, yeah, the references get pretty obvious toward the end, but it's obvious that Far Cry 2 was inspired by great source material and that's a plus in my book.
The only thing I can fault is the really terrible voice acting. Yeah, the other characters are mostly dry but they all serve their purpose... especially in establishing the intricacy of the two factions and the underground and... it's complex and my second playthrough still has me thinking "wow!"
Anyway, Gamespot completely missed this. I doubt they even finished the game. I checked their policies and read that they don't always beat games first, but this time they published completely wrong information. I'm betting that if they had actually finished the game, it'd have a 9.0 or even a 9.5. No, Far Cry 2 isn't flawless but it does NOT have a bad story.
Here's the review:

I was once a Gamespot-only person, but now I hate it. They can't write worth a good Goddamn and they especially can't review games. There was a time when they have writers and editors concerned with games, now they're obviously only concerned about getting hits and advertising.
Thanks for reading that.
Now, please tell me your opinion of Gamespot and the plot behind Far Cry 2. Am I the only one who thinks Far Cry 2 has an excellent story?
