So Glu mobile is shutting gamespy hosting down for good on May 31st effectively removing any online components of something like 800 games (not sure if this includes the 400 odd Nintendo DS/Wii games that was announced a few days ago.) Here's a list of what I could find http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/projects/2010-titles/ but doesn't include anything newer than 2010.

This is pretty bad news for all concerned, and annoyingly effects stuff like CD keys for physical copies of games too. Arma players are gonna be pissed :/

Wow, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, Saints Row 2, GTA 4, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, there's a lot of good games on that list. That's a real shame.

I don't have anything on that list but its a bummer for those who do. A shame, really GS was quite a good service

Damn, got Red Dead Redemption a week ago, and was hoping to play with buddies more. Oh well, at least we'll have player servers on the PC titles (Republic Commando.)

Don't tell me this includes Planet . I still dig some of my essential Morrowind mods from there...

Wait, what in the fuck? It affects CD keys? So if I want to reinstall Rome: Total War, I'm not going to be allowed? Am I understanding this correctly?

So if I want to reinstall Borderlands from my physical CD I'm SOL?

That's nasty, better give us some alternative here!

Didn't they already shut down Gamespy 1-2 years ago? I remember not being able to play multiplayer on Lost Planet 3 when I got the game because of that.

I'm guessing that the servers for verifying CD Keys are also going to be shut down, and without a response from the server the game won't be installable, which is incredibly bullshit. Some devs might update their games to work around that, but most definitely won't because these games are old enough that it'll probably take more resources than is worth it.

Definitely a pretty shit scenario, but I will definitely be a lot more appreciative of any game devs who actually support their games and fix them to be playable after this happens.

Most of the games will be made available, either as the decades-old shovelware that started inundating Steam, or semi-competent GOG repackaging.

It still means a brand-new purchase, but it doesn't bother me as I'd rather have my stuff digital anyway. I've bought games twice just because I'd rather have a downloadable copy in the past.

I can already hear the cries of the hard-copy enthusiasts/dinosaurs welling up, however.

I just found out out about this, and I'm pissed. Some of my favorite games use Gamespy, and still have active community servers. Including Battlefront II and, even more annoying (because I just friggin' bought it) Battlefield 2142.

For those people that are worried about being unable to install games, and activate them. This is when it becomes totally OK to torrent a load of crack files.

I wouldn't worry. If it exists, it's already been cracked. The transition time should be zero!

Man, I've discussed this with a friend and we both came to the same conclusion: Sad to see this one go.

I mean, Games for Windows Live I was actually glad to see go down in flames. Shame about the games that will go down with it, but overall the service was always a pile of junk. It was just this bloated cancerous growth in PC games for a while, a temporary plague, and if a few games must die or be amputated to clear it up, then so be it. Sad but necessary.

Gamespy though... Gamespy has an actual legacy. First game I ever played online was Medal of Honor Allied Assault. That has gamespy. The first Call of Duty and Battlefield games all had Gamespy. Dawn of War 1... Gamespy was ubiquitous in the late 90s early 2000s, and for all its flaws it was a pretty decent system.

So yeah... sad day...
