Couldn't see a news article 'bout this on the front page, so here goes. All those of you living in the UK will, at some point, have been into a Gamestation store. I always used to prefer them before because they offered a decent stock of ye olde games, alongside the shinier, newer gubbins which so impresses the youngsters these days.
A teletext game magazine called Gamecentral claimed earlier this week that Gamestation would be consolidating their 'retro' sections into 25 stores nationwide, and that excess retro stock would be...sold off at lower price? Given to charity? No: destroyed. Stamped on, scratched, snapped and burned.
I try not to get drawn into Daily mail 'won't someone please think of the children' hand-wringing, but if this is true...well, it's just shit isn't it? I've been trawling the internet a bit to try and verify it, but have so far mostly come up with rumour and hearsay. There's a lot of tales from anonymous Gamestation workers who claim managers have come into their stores and personally overseen the destruction of stock.
If it's a case of destroying the thousands of copies of FIFA '92 and whatnot they have lying about in their bargain bins, so be it I guess. My inner conspiracy theorist would propose it could all be a smear campaign started by GAME, Gamestation's main competitor. Except then I remember GAME own Gamestation now, so probably not. What it seems to be to me is a company which owns a huge number of retro games destroying most of their stock and increasing the rarity of the remainder. It physically pains me to think there may be people out there stamping on copies of Secret of Mana and Panzer Dragoon Saga on the behest of head office.
So...thoughts? Opinions? Outraged ramblings?
