Couldn't see a news article 'bout this on the front page, so here goes. All those of you living in the UK will, at some point, have been into a Gamestation store. I always used to prefer them before because they offered a decent stock of ye olde games, alongside the shinier, newer gubbins which so impresses the youngsters these days.

A teletext game magazine called Gamecentral claimed earlier this week that Gamestation would be consolidating their 'retro' sections into 25 stores nationwide, and that excess retro stock would be...sold off at lower price? Given to charity? No: destroyed. Stamped on, scratched, snapped and burned.

I try not to get drawn into Daily mail 'won't someone please think of the children' hand-wringing, but if this is true...well, it's just shit isn't it? I've been trawling the internet a bit to try and verify it, but have so far mostly come up with rumour and hearsay. There's a lot of tales from anonymous Gamestation workers who claim managers have come into their stores and personally overseen the destruction of stock.

If it's a case of destroying the thousands of copies of FIFA '92 and whatnot they have lying about in their bargain bins, so be it I guess. My inner conspiracy theorist would propose it could all be a smear campaign started by GAME, Gamestation's main competitor. Except then I remember GAME own Gamestation now, so probably not. What it seems to be to me is a company which owns a huge number of retro games destroying most of their stock and increasing the rarity of the remainder. It physically pains me to think there may be people out there stamping on copies of Secret of Mana and Panzer Dragoon Saga on the behest of head office.

So...thoughts? Opinions? Outraged ramblings?

They're doing what?? Just give me the games, i'll gladly take them off there hands. Apart from Fifa. They can go ahead and destroy that.

Why not just sell them on ebay? Give them away as part of an offer? Charity auction? Destroying them seems stupid.

Well thats just plain shit really, isn't it. I, myself, enjoy a bit of retro gaming (mostly on emulators because It's hard to get the good games in physical form), and if that is true, it's just rediculous. They could very well just give them away. At least they'll be giving some sort of joy and happiness to someone. Or if there's problems with licensing or whatever, give away a free retro game with every purchase. There are more possibilities than stamping on old classics.

Edit: Dammit shadow, you beat me to my point!

That's just fuckin' stupid. Why would a store destroy rather than sell games? Hell, if I ever see one of their stores, I'll give it the finger, and then not buy anything from it. Stupid stunts like this make me lose respect for the perpetrator.

They'd be better off giving them away as a deal, like 'buy any two games and receive Super Mario Bros. 2 for free.' However, I'm having a bit of trouble feeling rage at this, because I wasn't around at the time when games which are now considered retro were top-of-the-line technology. We move on through generations, and as gamers we shouldn't cling on to ancient artifacts as much as we do.
