GameStop Cuts Off Xbox One Launch Day Pre-Orders

Xbox One Day One Edition is now available to order from Best Buy as GameStop meets its demand for launch day consoles.

If you're still considering whether or not to reserve a Day One edition Xbox One, you should probably make up your mind quickly. Just days after capping PS4 pre-orders [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125776-GameStop-Puts-a-Cap-on-PS4-Pre-Orders], GameStop has cut off launch day reserves of Microsoft's next console.

This also happened last month, with over the weekend [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125184-GameStop-Halts-Xbox-One-Preorders], and demand quickly exceeded the supply.

Hope is not completely lost, though: Best Buy has once again opened up Target [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Microsoft---Xbox-One%3A-Day-One-Edition/9008207.p?id=1219013502536&skuId=9008207] also have Day Ones for pre-order, if Best Buy isn't your thing; Amazon, on the other hand, is out.

And if you're wondering what the fuss is over getting a console on launch day, here's a reminder: Day One consoles get a special controller, distinctive packaging, and an achievement. Microsoft's next generation of consoles kicks off in November in North America, with Sony's PS4 coming at some indeterminate time this holiday season; the Xbox One launches at $499.99, while the PS4 will be $399.99. Hey, you don't really need to pay rent in November, do you?

This part blows my mind in more ways than I can fathom, and I'm actually one of the few people who want an Xbone. Out of all the reasons to preorder any new console to pick up on launch day, this is by far the silliest.

An achievement? Really?

Distinctive packaging? Oh my, best get my act together and start ordering, wouldn't want the box that will sit in my closest and / or be thrown out to be of the non-distinctive variety!

Of course, lack of legitimate benefit aside, RROD flashbacks will have me waiting a while after release before considering any purchases.

They actually did that for the 360 when it launched as well if you went to a certain event. I remember that Burnie and Gus from RT were talking about it on an episode of Patch once and how they didn't get it. You would also get an achievement if you preordered and Xbox One while on the 360 dashboard.

OT: Let's hope neither the PS4 nor the Xbox One have the RRoD or something returning to screw people over.

Oh boy, an achievement!

Christ, even as someone who does have the Day One version pre-ordered, and enjoys getting achievements, that has to be the silliest 'bonus' I think I've heard of.

Why in the hell would anyone buy a console day one - especially the xbox considering the problems it had this gen. Surely people cant be buying it for packaging, achievements, etc. If i do get a console this gen i will be waiting as long as needed to know whether or not it will actually work for an extended period of time.

At least it doesn't look like we're anywhere near that slow start to the new console cycle that people were worried about (and Yahtzee wanted to happen). You've still got to sustain the success post launch, but as long as both of them don't screw up, it's looking good. Becoming a hard to acquire item always helps something become more valuable in people's eyes (the Wii launch was the best example of that)

It was the Xbox 360 "Zero Hour" event, and it wasn't an Achievement; it was a Gamer Picture.

I have both consoles pre-ordered on Amazon. My plan is to buy a $200 Amazon Gift Card every month from now till November, and apply all the Gift Cards to the pre-orders.

Seriously, Who the hell cares? A special controller? What's so special about it you ask?

You tell me!

Oh but an achievement as well....it....I.....*exasperated sigh*

Do people really need to be reminded of the pointlessness of pre-orders?

No it was an actual achievement that would show up on the console under a game that had only one achievement. Some people just make it their avatar on the 360 nowadays, but you couldn't get it any other way which is why Burnie and Gus were talking about it since they actually went to the Zero Hour event back when the 360 launch.
See here for details on it
It was put at it's own game.

Well it will make people happy!

And it will give Microsoft some more sales.. so can't be that bad. But yeah the stuff you get with it, really? Sadly there will be people who are going to buy it day one just for that darn achievement.

I hope that the launch consoles show no early problems. I hope that there will not be after 1 year of owning one something wrong with it that is systematic. I mean launch consoles.. can Fail it happens. But good hope! That is what you should have good hope and your warantee papers safely tucked away ;)

So for anyone who wants to buy a xbox one, well there you go another place to order has them again. Hooray!

The whole day one edition has really confused me. It doesn't really sound worth getting. When I first heard about it, I thought oh they are selling it with a game. But no. There's nothing really extra special.

it is sad that 6 months before launch we are already hitting the pre-order walls. all you people are doing is giving them money, with 6 months of interest, for nothing, and the actua lsale only happens after 6 months, whiel they already made millions free cash from investing this preorder money.

look at the bright side, at least when due to your RROD you will have to send it back in a month you can pack it up in a shiny box.
