Gamestop gets +1 from me

This past August, I got a used 360 from Gamestop and made sure to buy the 1-year warranty for it. Have had a few lockups with it, but nothing too bad or chronic. Then when I turn it on this afternoon, I'm greeted with the RRoD.

Most fortunately, I kept the receipt in a safe place and still had the box (with barcode stickers) that it came in. I call my usual Gamestop and they don't have any replacements in stock, but we'll check and see who does. Fortunately, it's on the same bus line that I take to Gamestop and Kroger. I call ahead and have them hold it, ride on down, they scan it and even let me keep my composite HD cable. I sucked it up a bit by exchanging a wireless for a wired, but I got some store credit off of it and bought another warranty. Out of there in 10 minutes.

Total cost for an insured 360? $10.

So while Gamestop usually gets a bad rep, and even though I stopped shopping there a lot (only for reserves now), they get +1 in my book for today.

I've never bought from there without having to go back to replace at least one damaged good, both hardware and software. ZO was right, they are using me as free labor. >=(

Bad luck there. I've had exactly two non-working games...Skate and Gears 1. Got Skate exchanged easily enough, same with Gears...though my friend and I beat it in co-op over 2 days, I returned it the next day saying it didn't work and I wanted to put the refund money towards Gears 2. Sold that back to them a month later for $33...so by my reckoning I think I actually *made* money by playing both Gears games.

And as for the 360 breaking, well...it's a 360. RRoD's are almost inevitable.

It is still a tad lame that you had to pay an extra 10 dollars to replace a system that should have worked fine for more than a year in a first place. If your new one breaks due to the same problem, you can send it in to get fixed next time instead of having to get an all new one. So there are other outs to this.

I buy from used game locations all the time. It pays to look at the cds before running out the door. Ask if they have another copy if the cd has mechanical gouges or large scratches/chips. If a game has a questionable scratch around the outer side of the disk, you should be able to tell very quickly if it works or not when putting it in the system - which could at request be the system in the back at their store.

Otherwise there is always resisting the urge and get the game new.

Gamestop gets a seriously bad reputation, but I have never had problems there. Of course all I have ever done with them is reserve games. So far they are +5 in my book with no returns necessary.

That's pretty awesome, but I have to say that it would take more than that to get me to spend money there.

I've bought plenty of stuff from Gamestop, and have never had to return anything. Maybe it's better in different areas.

I paid the extra $10 for the warranty.

Yeah, that still isn't enough to redeem them in my mind. Part of the reason that you weren't ripped off is that you yourself were smart about it.

I like my local Gamestop, it's not that bad of a place. Though I am starting to order off Amazon more often.

The good news is that GameStop took your broken console and gave you a new one, no hassles, because you had a warranty. (Same thing happened with my PS2.)

The bad news is that the Zero Originality guy who was complaining about GameStop pointed out that they tend to take their broken consoles, send it off to some place that does a half-assed job fixing them, then resell them in hopes that whoever gets them next won't be so persistent about getting a working one.

If so, their good turn for you is step one in a bad turn for others. The +1 becomes a -5. It's possible the very console you received as a replacement has been through this process.

As a general rule, store employees don't test their games, most of their accessories, and definitely none of the refurbished or used systems they get shipped to them--firsthand knowledge.

Always check discs and cables before you leave the store and don't be afraid to ask for other copies or cancel a purchase if it's not quality.

I'd like to introduce myself as a 360 gamer, who has had his 360 for a year and a half now - without RRoD! *puffs chest out proudly*
