Shop at Play 'n Trade.

Seriously. I was a loyal Gamestop customer, but when I went to Play 'n Trade, they went to insane lengths to keep my business, and they did.

Notably, I asked if they had a copy of Parasite Eve II, knowing full well that they wouldn't - nobody does. The one clerk said "Hey, hold on, I know a guy in another store across the province, give me a couple days".

The next day, the dude called me. He called his friend/co-worker, talked him into trading it in at his local Play 'n Trade (yes, this other guy actually owned this copy), then they express mailed it to my local PNT at no extra charge, just so I could pay eleven dollars for one of the rarer PS2 games out there.

I also want you to keep in mind that this guy and I had never met before, this clerk was just amazing. I've asked friends in other cities and they have had similar experiences.
That's amazing. I buy out of self-run businesses, I'm not going to be some corporation's *****.

god I hear so many horror stories about gamestop, but I've never recieved anything less than amazing services from the people at my local branches. As a matter of fact if I just need something new and interesting to play I go down to the store and ask them if there's any game they would reccomend. Best part is 90% of the time they tell me where I can go and find new copies for really good prices.

Hell they even went so far as to one time call up the wal-mart in town that had the game for $10 cheaper and have them put it on hold for me. I'm sorry you guys have shitty service when you visit your branches, but maybe you should complain to corporate/district headquarters about the shitty service you've recieved, only way you're going to get it fixed.

we only have Electronic Boutiques here in Canada. They're pretty awful, they'll take about a zillion pre-ordered then not get that many in their shipment. So even if you pre-order a game you don't get it on release day, what?!?

Anyways, I can always just go over to the futureshop beside it and get any game I want on release day, so I just do that.

Oh, wow. There is a Play n Trade here in Socal... however, it's in Irvine, apparantly. Not at all within comfort distance to go and check out.

*sadface*

Guess I'll stick with eBay and Craigslist, for now...

(But, hey! Instead of paying $54.99 for Fable 2 that's used price at the Gamestops here, I got it + its strategy guide for ~$24 including s/h!)

I will go to that Play n Trade some day, however. It is now on my 'Must do sometimes in the not so near future' list.

eta: !!! Found one in Whittier upon further searching. SCREW YOU GAMESTOPS IN WHITTIER (including the one under which is responsible for second scenario in original post).

ohh god i like the place but somtimes i think they like there jobs too much, what i mean by that is that i will casualy go in to buy a game and end up getting in a, now here is the kicker, 48 minute long conversation on zelda. 48 pissing minutes! i just want to take the game home and play it with my girlfriend.
but nooooo they have to question me on it and not to mention that they have to check my ID and social security every 3 seconds!
i like the people there they are cool to talk to but they dont realize that i may be nice to them just to speed up the process but it only makes it worse! i just want to go!
am i alone on this?

I enjoy buying sealed games instead of used. You should have called his manager, he really has no right in telling you whether your buying habits are stupid or not.

Reminds of a situation I once had. I went to Gamestop looking for Xbox Originals to play while my 360 was in the shop, so I picked up the first KOTOR, Morrowind, and Scarface: The World is Yours for around $20.00 used. When I got home, Morrowind was slashed across the back of the disk, and Scarface actually had a piece of the disk missing. I took the two back the next day, but was told that even with the receipt, I could another copy of Morrowind, but they could only give me $2.00 for Scarface.

I shop at E.B. Games now.

I have had similar experiences with gamestops I am also very OCD about games mine comes more from the fact of it can take me a month to finish a 10 hour game sometimes with how busy I get and usually when I am playing it is between the hours of midnight to 5 in the morning. Which is why I always buy new and I always get the same question why new we have used blah blah blah. Sorry I do not want to be sitting there in a epic battle at 3 o clock in the morning only to have the game quit because the disc is scratched. If I do have to buy used I usually go to Rock 30 Games they have always treated me well and will let me look at the disc before I buy.

They're under pressure from management to push used game sales cause it's a HUGE profit margin for them.

Really, i guess the worst experience i've ever had at a gamestop was a month or so after fallout 3 hit the shelves. I didn't have much spare cash, having just gotten married, so i was waiting to buy it. not used, just not for 60 bucks, and not right now. (pretty sure they dont do used PC games anyways).

anyways, im in the gamestop browsing the used ds game, and i pause on my way out and glance down at the FO3 strat guide in front of the counter. This is obviously a cue for the gamestop employee to rave at me about how awesome FO3 was, and how i should totally cough up the 60 bones for it right then and there, even after i explained i didnt have a lot of dough. And THEN the wanker had the audacity to begin telling me KEY POINTS OF THE STORYLINE. I told him to shut up and go to hell, and left. Won't be back in there again.

I guess the only redeeming part of this was his poor coworker. she kept giving me this look from behind his back that said 'if you don't kill him, I will.' I imagine she'd heard the same spew too many times to count.

The gamestop by my work isnt nearly as messed up. They're all laid back, and make sure you get what you want, and dont try to pass you the crappiest used merch.

maybe its just the Gamestops in malls that are messed up.

Personally, I just go to Game Crazy, they have REALLY good service. My friend and I went there to get BioShock, it was $29.99, he told us they had a used copy for about $7.00 less, then he went on to explain a general idea of the game. He was very friendly and I plan to go to that Game Crazy in the near future. Game Stop, however, is very different. I went to one and just wanted to rent a game (COD5), the ***** at the counter started whining about how it was so terrible and violent. I should have said, "No, really? Gee, I never heard of the game, that's why I wanted to play it! I certainly couldn't manage to read the back of the box on my own!"

Man, I hate them. They're expensive, too. I'd rather go to Wal-Mart if I can, but when looking for an older game, I have to go there.

Sorry about all of your Gamestop angst, Quixestic.. They should have lowered the game back to $4.99 for scamming you like that. But I don't really get these sorts of problems; usually the typical greasey, acne-ridden teenage store-clerk just gives me a funny look because I'm not greasey, acne-ridden or a dude. And then he has to comment on that.

Also, does anyone ever buy used games, pop it in the good ol' console, only to find out that it's horribly scratched and doesn't work? And then wonder why the hell places are reselling these games over and over and buying them without testing them to see if they're worthless?

Sounds like your Gamestops pretty much suck. The Gamestops in my area have cool guys working there who will actually help you. It's just cool and professional. Everyone there seems to know what they're doing and I enjoy shopping at mine. Sorry about your crappy stores.

The only real problem with Gamestop that I've found is that the trade-in values are shit. If you're going to sell a game for 55 dollars used, then why would you buy the game for 20? If you need to sell any games or systems, sell them on craigslist or something better.

I can tell you why the employee bugged you about getting a used game, they get graded on how many used games they sell, along with pre-orders. this person probably didn't have many used game sales and needed more as more used games sales means you get more hours and since most gamestop employees make minimum wage it does matter to them.

the second set of employees were just lazy, I know gamestop has a lot of stickering to do, it's one of the two things they do the most of, however that doesn't excuse the fact that they didn't tell you about the price, that was a dick move. I can tell you they gave you different cases because they don't care and from your story you didn't make it apparent to them that you did so I put you at fault for that one.

Reasons like this are the reasons that I rarely go into any gamestop other that one a little out of my way. The employees there are nice and knowledgeable. That and I can walk in and get greeted by my first name, that's right when I walk in, unless the manager is busy, I get greeted as my name.

Yes they do and I knew several employees of EB who bailed out after the takeover because they got a whole bunch of new arbitrary rules that they had to follow.

Well Gamestop is turning into the K-mart of game stores.

SubPar selection.
Apathetic employees.
Great Prices!
The prices are horrible.
Instead of just being able to purchase the game and head on home, instead I am forced to endure near ten minutes of one of the employees drilling me and questioning me on why I 'have' to have the game new, and in the plastic.
THey're doing this because employees get rated based on used sales. New-sales don't count.

Just don't shop at gamestop, buy your games at ebay, amazon, or bestbuy if you don't want to shop online.

The Gamestop near where I live is pretty cool. I guess it varies by location. Also, Play n Trade sounds pretty cool, but I have quite literally never seen anything other than a Gamestop within a 30-mile radius of me. (Except for a Babbage's, bizarrely.)

The gamestop near here has people who are actually passionate about gaming. So I don't get much of that, although there is the occasional old lady cashier who yells at me for not playing outside, honestly, you'd think I get enough at home, right?
