Employees can make any store feel like a chore, whether it be used game store, video store, or general department store.

I had gone to a game store with a friend a few years ago. She wanted to buy a PS2 for her mother's birthday (This was before PS3 came out. Her mother is into gaming as a stress-reliever.) Upon asking for one, the employee started telling her that she should get an Xbox360 instead. How the Xbox was by far superior and had a better game selection. He then started harassing her about how PS2 games sucked. And, what's worse, he refused to sell her a damned PS2! They had a ton of them as well. It was infuriating.

She ended up biting her tongue until a point, then throwing a fit and leaving. I stayed on the sidelines and watched the proceedings. We went to a nearby toy store, that also happened to sell gaming consoles, and she purchased a PS2 with absolutely no incident there.

Needless to say that the employee and others in his small clique (others that preached about the Xbox being superior to all other consoles at customers) did not work at the store long before mysteriously disappearing off of the face of this planet.
Are you seriously suggesting the Playstation 2 is more powerful than the Xbox 360?
How the heck did you get that from their statement?

I once tried to sell a new copy of Midnight Club LA that I had literally owned for only a week and my rockband guitar and mic. I did this in hopes to buy Left 4 Dead which looked epic at the time. The guy at the counter only gave me like 26 bucks for the week-old, mint condition game and 8 bucks for the guitar and mic. I felt ripped off and im never selling them anything back again.
You didn't need to take it you know.

Also, the "guy at the counter" was just doing what the computer told him to do.

Remember, the people you are speaking to do not have the power to do anything. So make everyone happy and just shut the fuck up.
The people that work there know damn well what they're doing. They buy YOUR game at ridiculously low price and then they sell it used to some poor sap for like $54.99 its a scam.
The people that work there know what they are doing. Generally, it was this or McDonald's. If it came down to that, I think we would all choose Gamestop.

Gamestop isn't an ILLEGAL business, but it is horrendously unethical from my standpoint.

He was just doing what he was told, so he could get money for himself and/or his family.
Im not saying what they do is illegal but its just a really sleezy business strategy.

a friend of mine got me marvel ultimate alliance for my birthday... label price was 9.99.. used.. and the condition of the case was laughable. Let me describe this case to you.. It didn't really have the art for the case - It was actually a single panel (the back) of the french case art insert that comes with some canadian games. So it had no end label, no back, just a front, that was the back, in french.

It also had the french instruction manual - again, stuck in there to artificially inflate some value into the game..

The game itself, was broken. Didn't work.

Rang up as 14.99.. yup, 5 more dollars then the label of this defunct piece of shit. It was the only used copy in the store, and I really wanted it, so my friend got it for me.. pissing and moaning about the 5 dollar hidden "fucky game" fee.

He brought it to my house, we booted it up, sat down with 2 more friends, ready to wreck some shit as the deadpool, iron man, spider-man and wolverine.. Alas.. like I said, it was broken.

My friend had a conniption fit. It was the straw that broke the camels back, he took it back, screamed at the ***** behind the counter until he was almost thrown out of the store. He got a new copy of the game, but they wouldn't give him a new case or refund the 5 dollars.

Fucking jerkwads.

I'd toss your friend out of the store if he was screaming and bitching about something that could easily be fixed by requesting a replacement or calmly demanding to speak with the manager.

Just because you are the customer does not mean you have a right to go absolutely beserk over an issue that can easily be fixed if everyone cooperated. I wonder why some employees at stores give crappy service, hmmm?

There seems to be one huge paradox on the Employee-Customer relationship. If you've ever read The Customer is always Wrong [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.70218?page=1] thread, you'll see many stories of how the employee had to handle a customer like a baby because they wouldn't shut up and cooperate, and that in turn makes the customer treat the employee like a retard because they won't do something that they ask no matter how crazy it is.

What did your friend accomplish by going back to the Gamestop and bawling like a *****? He got a new copy, fine, but he didn't get a new case (doesn't matter about that) and he didn't get a refund. And you would wonder why he didn't get a refund of $5? It couldn't be because he treated the employees there like crap, no way, it's because Gamestop are "fucking jerkwads".

My Gamestop is perfectly fine, save for an occasional mess up, and when that happens they easily fix it or give me a refund. Here's what I do, I think of the game I want, go in, ask for the game, get the game, then get out. If they ask me if I want a subscription or something (which they rarely do) I pretend to think about it for a few seconds then politely say "no thanks". It's because of this that I have a good relationship with the employees at Gamestop, and I do intend to work there as a first job to get footing in more jobs to come.

Obviously, as an employee, you're going to meet stupid customers. And as a customer, vice versa. It's inevitable, regardless on if you have good relationships with the employees/customers. But to all customers out there, you're not helping by making a buffoon of yourself when you want a refund on a game that you bought 2 months ago. To all Employees out there, you're not helping by standing there and staring at the person who wants 3 different games. Also, try to ask questions a little less.

As far as I can tell, you are not at fault for this. What you went through was simply bullshit on behalf of Gamestop.

I admit to going to Gamestop and spending far more than I should within them a lot.

But out of all the stores I have been to, I have come to the conclusion that there are two that I am fed up with, and will never go back to.

The first of the two is actually located in the mall I work at - which made it a convenient place to go to after work hours, but... it seems every time I go there, I end up leaving irritated and-or upset over one thing or another; and it always has to do with the employees.

See, I do NOT go into the store with the desire to be made at all awkward/uncomfortable when all I want to do is go in, peruse and buy game(s).

Yet it seems that's the only thing that ever happens to me with this store.

Latest incident?

I wanted to get this game, and I wanted to get it new - now, as I'm sure everyone more or less knows, Gamestop tends to have on the shelf 'New' games that are out of the shrink wrap and all that jazz; and, while some of them have more copies on the shelf that are in the plastic, still, the shelved copies tend to be their only copy of 'New' games.

The game I wanted, I wanted to get it in the plastic, and so I asked if they had it - It was considered a popular game, so I figured chances were good that they still would. Luck had it that they did.

Yay, right?

Nope.

Instead of just being able to purchase the game and head on home, instead I am forced to endure near ten minutes of one of the employees drilling me and questioning me on why I 'have' to have the game new, and in the plastic.

Cue awkward feelings and a feeling of being just plain uncomfortable.

I tried to explain that, due to some OCD I have, that when I can, I have to get games new (and sealed) if at all possible; Or, if not new/sealed, at least as like new/mint as possible... there's nothing wrong with that, is there? It wasn't hurting him, or anyone...

Yet he had to continue getting on my case about it, making me feel like I'm some idiot because of what I felt more comfortable with, claiming that it's stupid because one could buy the same game used and save money as well as 'get more' out of it.

Blah, blah, blah.

Plus, when the person ringing up my order FINALLY ran it through and all, she made fun of the fact that my PIN number is so long (twelve digits).

Scenario Two:

Happened a while ago, but I'm curious to hear if anyone else has had this happen to them?

Background: I tend to be rather anal/picky/obsessive when it comes to buying games used. If I get it used, the case has to be in excellent/mint condition with original artwork and HAS to come with original manual... Disc also, preferably, is as near mint as possible, meaning little to no scratches.

I know, what's the point in buying used if I'm going to be such a freak about it, right?

Still.

Anyways.

So at this one Gamestop, I picked up a few games including Grand Theft Auto III (It was $4.99 - keep that in mind, it IS relevant.)

I went to purchase them, and wasn't paying too much attention when the person ringing me up went to get the discs and all, paid and headed out to the car.

Once in the car I did my usual check discs routine, when I noticed something odd... The GTA3 game... was not the one I originally picked up.

I know this, because I made sure to get the best, newest looking GTA3 case/manual/poster that I could find, and the one I now had was disgusting (to me) and nothing at all what I would of agreed to go ahead and get.

Plus, I noticed, that the price tag on this GTA3 sported a price of "$6.99".

...
Check my receipt, and yup, I got charged $6.99 for GTA3, even though the case I picked up (and all others in the displays) stated that it was $4.99.

Not cool.

Of course, when I went back into the store to question this, all the employees would tell me is this: Oh, well, the game was $4.99 at one point, but that was the old price and the new price is $6.99; we just haven't gone through and changed the prices of the games on display yet.

...
...
...
The whole switching the cases on me and charging me more than what I thought something was? Not right at all, and made worse to the fact that they NEVER BOTHERED TELLING ME.

I don't know about what everyone else thinks, and I hate to sound like some entitled ***** here, but it was NOT right of them to pull that crap. What they SHOULD of done is, at least, TELL me about the price change and ASK me if I still wanted to purchase the item.

Even better, they should of honoured the pricing it stated on the display - It isn't the customer's fault if THEY didn't update matters.

Blah, blah, blah.
I wish I wasn't so... weak, when it comes to confrontations and stuff.

Uh, all ranting and rambling aside, I guess the main point/question of this is:

Has anyone else had bad experiences with Gamestop or buying games in general?
I was at EB games (Candian version of game stop) and I wanted to return L4D because its not my type of game. Its not bad just not for me, I see that they have a copy of RE5 so I ask for that. Then the guy who works there gets all pissed and says that RE5 sucks and I quote "In the zombie apocolpys, I don't want to sand still to shoot" He went on for about ten minutes until I got the manager and told him what had happened. I mean I'm all for taking about the ups and downs in games but it came to a point were I almost said "Shut the fuck up and just give me my game so I can go home!" Then I told the manager I was leaving and boycotting the store, just to spite the prick cashier. Well as far as I know the cahier now works in the back of the store, and the new cashier shuts up and sells you the game.

Now, I'm not sure on the complexities of American law, but in the UK this is illegal. If a product is advertised at $4.99 (i.e. the price on the box), they must sell it to you for that price, so long as you have not tampered with the price (peeled the price off another product and put it on the game). It's called "False Advertising", and at least it would have netted you with the $4.99 copy. At most? They would have had to pay you compensation for undue distress. Bless the UK legal system :D
