This right here is the true sin of the work martyr. Steve is a sad sack millennial with no family and will work without pay, so Carol doesn't need to see her 2 kids either and come in too. The problem here is the shortsightedness of it all, because the businesses that push to be open on the what two federally mandated holidays is what is creating the rift they are seeing with Millennials and not purchasing at retail anymore. Don't shit where you eat is a lesson Game Stop has never learned.

The stores are all full of funko pops and thinkgeek shit these days anyway.
Didn't know we had one in the city an hour away, walked in to check it out. Half of it was trash merch. What happened?
Short answer: You happened. Digital distribution has nearly killed new physical copies, and with people finding out some games are basically just a download installer on a disc anyways, have stopped worrying about purchasing through retail. The used game market has been declining, and they thought they could force bigger single purchases by not providing older, cheaper experiences from that warehouse of used games. So what do they have left that sells, branded novelty merch. You want to see the future of Game Stop, walk into a Spencers.

Mainly cause publishers take so much money compared to Funko.

That is a lousy thing to do to their employees... I worked for GS about a decade ago and from what I hear now it has really gone downhill with the way it treats its staff.
I worked for the about two decades ago (They were called Funcoland) and I can't imagine it being worse now then it was back then.
Wait... Gamestop used to be Funcoland? I thought Funcoland just went out of business at some point.

Side note, I just remembered Funcoland was a thing!
Gamestop is a combination of the former Funcoland and Babbage's when they got bought up by Barnes & Noble back in the day and spun off as a new company.

Like jklinders above I've been in the food industry for 20 years, more in my case, and I can place a certain bet all the people complaining about Gamestop being open at Thanksgiving would throw a hissy fit if all the bars and restaurants were closed as well.

It's amazing how quickly opinions change when you can't get a drink or a meal cooked for you.

While I partially sympathize for the unfortunate employees, the darker side of me is having a moment of schadenfreude. I'm no stranger to working holidays, having spent years in food service and convenience stores. It sucked every time, and I cursed the idiots who made my time on the clock necessary (out of bread? You should have thought of that shit before you decided to make the stuffing, dumbass!).

Even now I can't really celebrate Thanksgiving, as the retailer I work for insists on having us show up in the evening to prepare for Black Friday. I usually have to celebrate Thanksgiving some other day as a result. I'm not going to wolf down my Thanksgiving meal without enjoying it because I have work on the mind.

That's a sucker's bet and no one in their right mind would take it.

I have a true story here. A few years back there were some quaint laws on the books prohibiting stores larger than a certain size (with exceptions for drug stores) from being open on Sundays around here. After some serious pushback and a bit of creative bookkeeping, it was pushed through the courts that trying to enforce this law was impossible. When the day was approaching that Sunday opening would be permitted someone (I'll refer to him as asshole for the rest of this post) was hanging around the front entrance to the restaurant I worked at. He accosted one of my co-workers who was clearly an order of magnitude smarter than asshole and tried to solicit support for some petition opposing the openings. So my co-worker asked him what he and his family did on the all important family day of Sunday. Asshole said "oh we make a day of it, we go for a drive, then we see a show, then we go for lunch afterwards." So my co-worker asked asshole what he thought of the family needs of the people working at the gas stations, movie theatres and restaurants. the response was "oh that's different." It seems no matter how low the rung you are in the service industry, there is always a lower rung of wage slave. That story has stuck with me a long time because it just reeks of "got mine, fuck you."

I very recently got out of the food industry. I wouldn't change much except how little I got paid but I'll be doing a little better on the paid time off front than before. Except the company I work for services US companies and I live in Canada. So while I will get holidays off with pay, they will be the wrong holidays. Won't see me crying about it though. I'll be getting overtime for holidays worked I previously didn't and there is still a little overlap.

I actually would take that bet cause I personally plan ahead for holidays. But asshole was just that, an asshole.

You can preorder from Walmart or BestBuy and get free 2-day shipping on damn near any game.
It's like the word 'buy' has been completely replaced with 'pre-order'.

If you don't want to get the game at launch, there's even less of a need to use GameStop, because you can just buy it on Amazon a couple months later for like $35, since GameStop prices are usually fucking insane.
My post had nothing to do with Gamestop.
