A friend of mine has applied for a job at Gamespot, and on the offchance that she gets it, how much knowledge about games do you need? She's not an avid gamer, and has stuck to Nintendo. Would a knowledge of this generation of consoles and associated games be enough?A sort of..rough idea?

From the Gamestop I go to, you don't really need to know much about games, most people don't ask. If anything, all you need to know to how to work at Gamestop is "That will be $55 please".

All she needs to do is have an interest in games and have that interest come off in the interview. Also, it would help if she was hot. Game stores love to have hot girls working there, it is an almost guaranteed hire.

I was an Assistant Manager at a Gamestop and I have very little knowledge of current video games. Most customers were not too happy that I never played any of the games, but hey, it was a pay check.

I would like to point out that to work at Gamestop you must be able to annoy people by saying "Do you want a strategy guide with that?!!"

For every person to reply by saying "No thanks, I has internetz" they are legally required to be presented with a cookie.

As a former employee of Gamestop I can safely say that you need no knowledge of video games to work there. If a customer asks you for information on a game then you can direct them to someone who does know.

Also, tell your friend that she can expect to be working the walls for her first few months organizing games alphabetically as well as vacuuming, sweeping the floors and cleaning to the windows. She will also have the duty of labeling certain games.

Also tell her to be prepared to deal with anons who bring in a fake copy of Batteltoads.

Well I used to work in Gamestation (British Game Store Chain) a few years ago now and for that they prefer people who spend a most of there time playing games and a good overall knowledge of all the main systems and of course retail experience.

But these days it's does really matter, if some of the local game staff are anything to go by. As long as she has a good interview and some retail experience sure she will be fine.
