Gamestop charges the same amount for the collectors editions/limited editions as well as the regular editions after they get traded in.

The reasons are that cases can get torn up, and they don't want to have to put a price on the value. All games in Gamestop's system have the same price, regardless of condition or if they have a case or booklet, it is easier for them that way. This isn't a great way to do business, but it's how they operate.

Regarding the DLC, the code was probably used anyway, so I don't think you would get the extra's.
yeah, this fucked me once.

my friend hates EB, but he knew I wanted Marvel Ultimate Alliance.. It was listed for 7 bucks.. it had a shitty case (it was just the back of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance cover cut to fit and stuck into the front of the case), and it just had a french manual, the only copy on the shelf though, so he picked it up

He took it to the counter, it rang up as 14 bucks, and they made him pay 14 for it. That's REALLY bad policy in retail. It may be illegal, but I'm not a lawyer, so I'll just say it's generally really bad policy. He gave it to me for my birthday.. we sat down to play it.. it didn't work..

Let me tell you.. he was PISSED at EB about it :p

Well the ripoff thing isn't just at gamestop. Just their used game prices.

But I've seen the same-price collectors edition games in many other places like best-buy and walmart too.

The only place I trust buying used from is Hastings, honestly. They have that guarantee and everything, so if your games don't work, you can simply bring them back.
Anyway, this isn't really a ripoff, if the collector's edition of Fallout 3 was the same price as my regular copy, I would have bought it.

WOW! I didn't know that they had merged. That really sucks. I remember when they would match each other's prices on any item, used or not!

But if you want to get a good game, you should go to (or have it shipped from)

I never claimed it to be a big deal. I was just curious, it seemed rather odd at the time.

Silly xxhazyshaodowsxx, Gamestop aren't stupid, they're just dumb.

Anyways, Gamestop is like the McDonalds of game retailers, it's serviceable and there's nothing wrong with it, but the people working there don't really care so much and aren't really that knowledgeable of the product. I go there when I need some obscure used game since they catalouge them, but you can find better deals elsewhere.

That does seem rather bizarre, and a bit unfair, considering I forked out extra for my collectors edition of Fallout 3 and now whereever you go it is always the same price. I just want to find a dumbwit who bought the regular edition in this situation and drive a stake through his arse... yerr I'm watching Buffy right now ;D

Game of year editions almost always come out at the budget/ same price as the regular edition. It's mainly because the company is adding in some extras and a cover that states "this game is popular" to get more sales. Nothing major there, more sales = more money. I work retail and I try to push the non-GotY editions out the door first because of this.

And working retail I've also noticed that Collector's Editions almost always drop tot he same price as regular editions after about six months, give or take a few. The reason for this is the company feels if it hasn't sold out by then, then it probably won't. So they drop it to the same price to get rid of them. I waited and bought FO3:CE after the drop, but I also knew it was a chance because if it had sold out, then I would have lost out. Luckily I didn't.

OH. My fellow Escapist, you have my thanks. See, I haven't worked retail in an establishment like that, It seemed like something pretty odd. Thanks again for clarifying that.

Yeah they do.
Mostly around bigger areas. I've got one near me (Barrie, Ontario), but it's usually called 'EB Games'. Same thing.

The laws might be different in Canada, but a store is not legally obligated to sell you a product at its listed price. This protects stores, for example from having a disgruntled employee pricing everything cheaper and having his friends come in an buy all of it up. Now is it good business sense is another discussion entirely. If it's within a few dollars and the store is still making margin off it, then yes many times it's simply better to not miss a sale.

We have the GameStop equivalent, called EB Games. They always annoyed me...
Actually we do have GSs now. One opened up just down the street from my local EB and half the guys that worked there now run GS (and this is not a big city, maybe a big town).

Question the games you were looking at were they used? EB or GS don't give you anymore for the CE editions of games than they would for the normal version (so if you are trading in a CE edition keep the swag). So I don't think they charge anymore for a used CE than they do for a regular.
