There is a gaming center opening in Cary, North Carolina in a few days. I think that this is the second business doing this in North Carolina (the first one had four such centers, and is now down to one). In case anyone wants to check it out, here's the link:

Basically, the place is going to let you play video games for an hourly rate, and I believe that there will be food and drink. Now, what I want to know from all of you is: do you think gaming centers have a future, will they become popular places for gamers to hang out, or will they be ignored and left to collect dust?

I find them rather expensive and they don't offer anything that I can't do at home.

I go to these centers quite regularly with my friends, it's not a place for solo gaming, that's why you have a rig at home.

But for social gaming it is alot of fun, especially when you get a LAN l4d vs going, it's nice to be in the same room with the people that you play with, for me anyway gaming is a very social experience. Not to say I don't like single players, but alot of games are just better played with a friend.

The center in my city is only £1 an hour tho so it's not a huge amount of cost. I mean if you're in town how else can you kill an hour with one pound?

There's a place like that fairly close to where I live called Waba Game. They offer all the major multiplayer titles, but there's a heavy focus on Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros., the two games I go there for.

I find it much more fun than playing online. I'm sure being able to play with people all around the world from the comfort of your own couch is convenient and all, but it lacks the social element that multiplayer was designed for. It just isn't as fun as sitting with an actual group of friends.

Because interacting with other humans is fun. It's the same reason bars still thrive as a business. Why go out and pay more for a drink when you can just drink by yourself at home? Because it's more fun with other people around.

My community has had one for a while, a local business owner just set up a small coffee shop with an X-Box 360 and a PS3.

It's been doing very well, and even people who don't care much for video games go there to watch and eat.

I think there's a space for them, though, personally, I haven't even went in there once.

Yea, these are dumb ideas. LAN centers are okay though.

Honestly, 90% of my friends own a gaming system. Why would we go there?
