I've been regretting not having played games much at all for so long and I've been looking for some true classics of gaming. Not retro games, mind you. Any age of game, but the ones that made the biggest impression. The true gems of the medium like the early Silent Hill games, Ico and SoTC. Kotor. Mega Man. Anything truly considered to be a really great game.

Dark cloud 2. One of the best PS2 games I have ever known. also hard as balls to find. I had found 5 cases to actual disk. So many stores had the case but didn't have the game.

Bioshock because it's my favorite game of all time.

Also Shadow of the Colossus because, like Yahtzee said, it's very unique and fun. Plus it's getting re-released :D

mischief makers hands down one of the greatest games ever
you will in no other game fight; on a cat, surfing a missile, while holding a missile and shacking it to make it to increase in size only to throw it at a wolf man riding a wolf mech.

Silent Hill (1 or 2 are best), Metroid Prime, Shadow of the Colossus, Pokemon (gen 1 - 3, can't speak for any of the others), Donkey Kong Country (1 & 2, can't speak much for 3 'cept that I didn't quite like it that much), Morrowind (especially PC version, with whatever mods you want), the Stalker Series...
Oh, and Battlefield 1942, Halo (yes, it did really help craft FPS's today) and Perfect Dark for FPS's.

I'm going on to long here, aren't I?

ohhh man, you haven't lived until youve played (warning, some old and very strange but awesome titles):

Myst (don't bother with the sequels unless you really want to)
Out of this World (pretty sure you can download it online, its AMAZING.)
Portal and Portal 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Monkey Island
Alice (madness returns if you like it)
Bioshock
Minecraft :D
Psychonauts (such a gem!)

Sorry to bombard you there, but ya...I love these games for a reason.

You should probably specify console or PC (or both). PC is my platform of choice, so:
System Shock 2/Thief series, Deus Ex (FPS)
Warcraft/Starcraft (RTS)
Planescape: Torment (RPG)

If you have a joystick lying around, I'd recommend checking out the PC flight/space combat sims from the 90's. X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, Freespace, Wing Commander, Red Baron, Wing Commander: Privateer, Red Baron 3D, Aces of the Pacific, A-10 Tank Killer, etc. Truly it was a golden era for the genre, and I'm disappointed that there haven't been many good ones released lately.

If you like quirky point-and-click adventure games, check out The Neverhood Chronicles as well. It's by Doug TenNapel (the same genius behind Earthworm Jim and The Tick), and it's absolutely hilarious.

I don't know if there is a Windows/DOS emulator available, but you may want to look into it: you'll get hours upon hours of gameplay out of just those titles above, not to mention the suggestions of other posters.

Oh, I forgot Syndicate and Syndicate Wars.

Hell yeah! Logged many hours on Tie Fighter-- Of course if you have a joystick (a force-feedback joystick is the best), I'd suggest MechWarrior3 as a 'must have'.

Beyond Good & Evil is a PS2-era gem and although it's generally extremely underrated many people on this forum recognise its awesomeness. And since it's just been released in an HD version it sure deserves a recommendation.

Bully (or Canis Canem Edit here in Europe) is the best Rockstar game ever IMO and one of my favourite games of all time. It's engaging, different, timeless, and strangely enough just generally a feel-good game.

Then there's the Metal Gear Solid series, especially MGS3 - if you can relate to the story and universe and dig the lengthy cut-scenes there's some great fun to be had here.

And I don't know if it's old enough to be considered a classic yet, but Fallout 3 is a must.

Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger (RPG)
Half Life 2
Street Fighter 2 or 3
2D Metroid games
Earthbound
Star Fox 64 (Coming to 3DS sooner or later)
Super Castlevania or Symphony of the Night. (First is retro skill test, second has RPG elements. Both are great)
