I find it interesting that anti-gaming people always focus on how FPSs are corrupting people. I find it interesting because when I look at strategy games I generally see far more death, mayhem and immorality. One can easily kill more people in 5 minutes of Total War or Civilization than you could in days of playing GTA.

I say this not to say I agree with the radical anti-gaming nut-job crowd but to get your views.

what do you think?

They only focus on FPS's because you're seeing the death up close. They don't care for the thousands of little sprites that you sacrifice to take over a fort, and you're not the one who's holding the guns (you're just the big guy sending them to be slaughtered)

LOL CLEARLY THE WORST GAME IN THE WORLD IS HEARTS OF IRON II BECAUSE YOU CAN CONTROL GERMANY AND LEAD THEM TO VICTORY IN WWII~!

;/

I agree with you to a point, but in Total War or Civilization, 30,000 deaths is a statistic, while in something like GTA, a pedestrian will actually run and cower from you, a policeman will try to talk to you, a driver will get out of his car and run, when you try to kill them.

ie: One kill in Manhunt will probably damage someone more than conquering the world in a Civilization game.

We generally in RTS games the bodies will disappear within a few seconds (only a few weeks ago did I realise that some people find it gruesome if they remained after death), but in FPS's they tend to hang around. And I think that chainsawing someone up close in Gears 2 is way more bloody than setting off a nuke in C&C3: TW.

It's got to do more with how you kill than how many you kill.

Seriously, why do people keep worrying about what antigame critics say?

When you bite into a big juicy steak, do you care how the PETA people feel about it?

When you buy a pet mouse, do you worry about what the Orkin man is thinking?

When you engage in illicit naked fisticuffs with your male lover, do you think about what a Methodist is going to think about it?

Shut up, man up, and play your games imo. Not really directed at the op, that last statement.

I agree, although I don't think I've ever engaged in fisticuffs with anyone, much less with all the stipulations carried by that particular scenario.. :~)

We hate on antigamers because it unifies us. Gamers tend to be split between genres, consoles, games series, or whatever, but on this topic we can all unite and say, "They're stupid." Once we've dealt with that, we go back to arguing about whether a Star Wars MMO could be better than a Starcraft FPS. Because arguing is what we do, complaining a close second.

Usually what they consider a controversy is more for the point of getting there name out rather then take a look at something. It is why Halo is ok but GTA might not be. All that matters is who is getting killed rather then what does. The main problem with GTA that I think is worth bring up is that you could choice to kill a hooker and many people over and over again, and most people choice to. Now GTA has it problems I grant you that, but it has that for the sake of sales rather then anything else. See the thing I have found with GTA or anything people call a controversy is rather just the mark that shows the symptoms of a problem that is there. GTA gets in the hands of a lot of kids because the parents allow them to buy it or right up pay for it without even caring. That is only one thing it showed a symptom of a larger cause that is a problem. It showed a problem with the medium of news where instead of focusing on why the kids have the game, they just go out to point the problems the game which only does more advertisement for the game and makes the actual problem worse in the end. Games when it come to controversies ussually only show symptoms of a larger problem, and never are one in themselves.

People still think that shooting games = shooting schools?

I thought this all sort-of ended when the whole world agreed that Jack Thompson was a know-nothing pissant with a bat up his ass.

Hmm you're right, RTS aren't holding up their end of the market. They should really starting doing things more outrageous to catch up with the FPS's.

EDIT: Dammit...wrong tread!

EDIT2: Well...while I'm here.

To me, controversy is just another form of advertisment.

Lets hijack this thread and turn it into a discussion for 'most offensive RTS'.

Design the RTS that would ban games worldwide.

"Theme Auschwitz" would probably turn me into an antigame crusader, for instance.

Of course, Mr. Thompson was not the only one. I mean, there are enough of those guys (see any Fox News rant or something with Glenn Beck (or is it Back) about Gta IV).
OT: Damnit, I hate people who spread such controversies. The whole Australiian L4D2 thing is ridiculous and I'll probably never get to play Six Days in Fallelujah.

Speaking of GTA, I know of at least two people who are less upset about the hooker-killing than the fact that the next bit of DLC has the word "gay" in the title.

Let's see, Killing somebody upclose in an FPS or third-person action game influences nubile young minds into shooting in schools (Yes, parents, it has NOTHING to do with the 12 guns you proudly display in the living room!). Then won't RTS like Red Alert and Total War influence these children to grow up and become nutjob leaders who send wave after wave after WAVE of their own men to their deaths?

Exactly. Didn't you know Hitler played C&C?

People focus on FPSs because they are more "realistic". Think of it this way: the generals don't get PTSD, the grunts do.

Anti-game sentiment holds more weight and has more effect. We are merely consumers, whereas protest is largely concerning developers and the product they put out. They can influence games being banned and deter other developers from putting out what they want to release. It can affect what we actually get to play in the end. It's not at all about what these people think of us for playing the games.
