Gaming Dealbreakers

Put me down for zombies as well. Nothing screams "we do not have a single interesting thought in our heads!" than a zombie apocalypse. Seriously, fuck zombies and everything to do with them. Every other aspect of the game would have to be flawless to make up for such a drab and overdone premise.

Having only one save slot is frustrating as hell. Farcry 4 I'm looking at you. You made me create another xbox account just to play without erasing my brother's game.

Monthly subscriptions

I want to play video games at my own pace and this game model kills that completely. I could possibly get behind the model if it they provided an option around hours played but not monthly. Too restrictive.

Always Online DRM - Unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. I still haven't played Diablo 3 because of hat.

Uplay - I gave it a try with several games and it's not like Steam or Origin because it simply has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I decided not to get any more games that use it. I'm a bit tempted to make an exception for the Flashback remake but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

30 FPS lock - It looks like the game barely runs and gives me a bit of a headache. I'll wait for a 60 FPS patch or just never buy it. This doesn't apply to 2D games however.

There might be others but these are the ones that pop immediately when I think about dealbreakers.

While not a decisive dealbreaker, any game in which I can't just save and quit anywhere/anytime without losing significant progress is much, MUCH less likely to be played by me.

I have kids, you see. What little game time I have usually comes late at night after they're in bed and all business for the day is taken care of. I usually only have an hour or two to play, oftentimes less. Games wherein "make to to the next save point without dying" is the main challenge (JRPGs are infamous for this) are hard to play under these conditions.

This is the reason I have owned a copy of FFIX for over 6 years and haven't yet played it (I played it when I was younger, so I know I like it, and my wife played it over the summer, so it didn't go to waste).

More damning is the copy of Persona 3 FES that has never seen the inside of my console, which has also been owned for over 6 years.

Also not being able to save when ever tends to kind of turn me off, especially in games that have high difficulties.
Example: I just beat this boss man that was a pain and im out of health items and low on hp....random enemy mob you didnt see rubs your boot and you die...........

then there's escort quests, FUCK escort quests! Now that said if they give you someone competent enough not to die if I turn around for 5 seconds then I got no problem with them

Always Online Singleplayer - Self explanatory.

Free to Play - While there are some exceptions, this usually means micro transactions and pacing screwed up to encourage them.

Lots of DLC - Often depends on the game, bu as a rule I like to buy full games, not parts of them.

Notoriously buggy - Cough cough, Ubisoft.

Ubisoft - Between Uplay, their outright lies, their buggy releases and the general disrespect for their customers, I think I've got enough reason to be skeptical about their titles.

No single-player: Yeah, games that are only multiplayer-based hold no interest for me; if there's no single-player mode then I won't be buying it. I don't do multiplayer in general, it's just not my thing. The only exceptions are local multiplayer modes, like in fighting games.

Similarly, games with monthly subscriptions or always-online requirements are also games I won't be buying, simply because I just don't care for them. Also, I don't like the idea of having to constantly pay for games - I like to buy a game and that's it, thank you. And as for always-online, I guess just sometimes I don't want to have to be signed in before playing.

Other than that, I guess just generally horror games. If a game is a horror then I'll pass thanks, not my kind of genre.

bad controls

If the game controls work by praying to some deity that something beneficial to yourself happens, then I lose all interest.

forced minigames

Minigames can be a lot of fun and provide some diversion. But it can be really annoying if I'm forced to play them to advance in the game. Sometimes that ties in with my first point, since the controls and the game itself might be less polished than the maingame. That can lead to a lot of frustration.

When the game essentially plays itself
Auto lock on is a killer for this. You can wipe everything on-screen out without even looking half of the time. Feels totally pointless playing.

Excessive Filler
Here's a wonderful adventure to lose myself in. Oh look, someone's decided to spread out every minute I enjoy with 5 min of filler between just to make the game longer. No thanks.

Crashes every 10-30 minutes.
I'm sorry Fallout 3, I just can't take that kind of annoyance.
