Hello fellow escapists, how are you today? I am good, thanks for asking. But, my day is not without a question.

After acquiring Alien Swarm on steam, I realized that my laptop is not capable of running, or the various other games I have for the pc.

So, I ask you escapists, since you guys are genially knowledgeable in gaming and as such gaming platforms (in this case, a pc) what is a good choice for a gaming desktop for a range of $700 to $1200.

Sorry if this a stupid question, but I've been looking for awhile now and I am not that computer saby :/

Any and all help would be appreciated, thanks in advance :D

You mean "savvy"?

Anyway, I'd say your best bet would be to build one yourself on the Dell website, so you know you're getting what you need/want.

Maybe not on the Dell website.

Look at the starter packs on www.newegg.com and build one yourself, its a lot cheaper; if you don't think you can just look up some youtube videos. Its not that hard, honestly.

I spent ~$900 on my rig and I can play Alien Swarm just fine. I'll link the parts for you:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181

That's a case, hard drive, ram, cpu, motherboard, video card and power supply.

Hope that helps!

Also, all these parts are compatible so you won't have to worry about double checking; the case also has amazing airflow and if you need more it has space for a fan/fans on the side.

oh for the love of all that is evil, don't do this! If you get it from dell, you end up paying extra for brand name premiums that do not exist when you buy the parts separately off a reputable site like newegg and assemble it yourself. Not much to it really, just a lot of wiring and fitting things into their proper slots etc, etc...

my comp that I built for like 800 dollars is capable of running basically any game on max graphics at a solid 60fps...barring Crysis of course.

Processor: Intel Core2 Duo 3.3 Ghz OC'd to 4.0
GPU: Ati Radeon 4870
Memory: 8GB DDR2 RAM(Yeah I know DDR2 sucks but it's OC'd to low end DDR3 speeds)

add in mobo, HDD, power supply, fan(s), and case choices, you should be able to make yourself a mighty fine rig for under 1000 dollars.

I completely agree with you on the power supply. I am currently using the one that I posted with no problems, but I'm one of the lucky ones. So, I would agree with you in recommending another PSU.

I have Toshiba. It has served me well. It got a virus, but that was probably my fault. It is perfect for me.

May I ask what games you want to play?
The big ones? Dawn of War 2, Starcraft II and The Old Republic
Assuming 1920 x 1080 resolution, the parts heaventorn linked you will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more then enough. If you are on a budget, then switching to the GPU (video card) I link you will be more then enough, if oyu are not then get the 5850 heaventorn linked you ( I am not a fan of xfx, but that card has gotten good reviews.) will be near overkill-like levels.

You will also need a DVD/CD drive, so get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204
alright, thank you
