Gaming/General Purpose Mouse Recommendation

So I've been using a laptop for ages, but have started getting into gaming again. As I'm sure you all know, trackpads are kind of terrible for gaming. However, I don't have a proper mouse (as in, you can't left and right click at once, and registering a right click is dodgy at the best of times).

So, Escapists, what kind of mouse would you recommend for gaming? I'm going to go with wired more likely than not, prefer a heavier mouse, play FPS's, RPG's (western, some old school, some new school), general action games, and the occasional TBS. I think I prefer palm gripping, but don't let that exclude anything.

I know a few people who swear by the Razor brand mice, I've not used them myself though.
My current preference is my Logitech MX Revolution (wireless though), good comfort, button placement and a has a good weight to it, also the frictionless wheel is a godsend for scrolling through massive reports (and works well in games too, I expected it to be too sensitive but it's spot on)

The best advice I can give is go into one of the big stores and try out the mice on display and see which one fits your hand the best, you could spend £100 on a mouse at someone's recommendation but find that you hate the placement of the buttons when you use it, or find a mouse you love the feel of for £5.

At home I have a Cyborg RAT7. Expensive mouse, but I like it. Also can mess with the DPI at the press of a button, which I don't use much, but kinda handy.
For work I have a Microsoft mouse... does the job.

I'm also seconding Pickled Soul's suggestion of going into stores and just picking up and using the mice. As people's hands are different sizes and shapes, different mice suit them. Also some don't click terribly well... feel of the clicks and the scroll wheel is a big part of the user experience :)

I personally use a Razer Deathadder Black Edition. Costs about $50. It's a 5 button mouse with adjustable DPI settings up to 3500DPI. It's really comfortable and it's designed for palm gripping though I use claw grip when playing FPS's.

I was originally planning to get a RAT7, but stumbled across the Logitech MX518. Beautiful mouse, fits the hand perfectly, so it feels as if it's an extension of your hand instead of a mouse. Then again, that all depends on your hand shape, but for £20 you get an extremely decent gaming mouse for not much money. The newer version, the Logitech G400 has roughly the same price but twice the dpi. Highly recommended as a first gaming mouse.

Incidentally, does anyone actually use their gaming mouse on a dpi setting over 5000? just wondering.

DPI is just a way of extending your E peen really. No one I know uses a higher DPI than 2000. My RAT9 goes over 5000, but if I use it I have no control over anything I do.

P.S. Get the RAT7 if you want a RAT mouse. It's just as good, and wired. I won mine in a competition, so yeah, I love it, but buy the cheaper one :) But again, it's whatever you like the feel of really :D

Mid priced Logitech. Sturdy, good ergonomics and easy to use software for button mapping.
I use a MX Revolution for work, 3D CAD. At home a G3.

Yeah the RATs are great mouses, I have the RAT 9, great for FPS's. Only recomend for the long haulers and heavy 'gamers'. Its really expensive, but it was worth it, I like the wings, to rest my thumb n' pinky and it looks like the BATMOBILE!!!.
