forgive me if this has been talked about before

personally it all sounds like bullshit to me...well some of it at least, I think its rather impossible to predict the future, and god only knows what the nest ten years will bring

one was the "death of single player" which I call bullshit on, its especially annying when they say stuff like "ohh everyone has facebook EVERYONES connected" they seem to fail at the Idea that not having anyone in your game can be an important part of the experience (Dumbasses) ok sorry as you can tell Im a little irritated by that whole mindset

anyway I dont claim to know better or have any Idea, and I guess right now its not worth thinking about

so what do you think?

It's by IGN, so of course it's bullshit. They don't know how to write anything else. Single player isn't going anywhere, and not everyone has Facebook or would want it in their games. IGN is just writing more absolutely ridiculous nonsense to try and get people like you to read their bat-shit insane article and then make threads about it elsewhere which in turn leads to more people reading their article.

The best thing to do when you see one of these articles is to never link it and never discuss it on other sites. If they stop getting what they want from these asinine articles, they'll stop writing them.

It's IGN, what were you expecting...intelligence?

These are the guys who made a video using a FIFA game where the USA defeats Ghana in soccer just because in the 2010 World Cup Ghana defeated the USA.

"Single-Player Gaming Will End"

Really? I can see that if people stop buying into single player franchises but some of them are going particularly strong.

Besides that, many single player games can offer a more interactive theatrical experience that can't be offered in the online world. ToR is going to try bless Bioware's heart, but so did Guild Wars to a point and if you didn't hurry and and skip the cut scenes your party would just drop on you.

I just derailed myself off this matter with a shiny object and lost where I was going with this next.

Facebook wants to be the new AOL 3.0 I suppose. Kinda late to that party if you ask me.

Umm what do they define as a 3D game? coz i thought that 2D games were already a thing of the past because this sentance makes no sense
With over 50 3D games on the market today from Sony and 100s more coming, panelists agreed that 3D isn't going away.
Umm only 50odd? i thought pretty much every game since the PS1 was 3D? when was this done now? 2011 or 1996?

i think these guys are just a tad insane, especially if they think single player will be dead in as little as 3 years!! yes co-op is nice, but umm bethesda are still around and games for example like oblivion, fallout 3 and the up and coming skyrim either have been or will be massive hits!! and theyre single player exclusive and IGN themselves picked Oblivion and Fallout 3 as the GOTY when they were released :/

bloody fools

I assume they mean "3D" as in that annoying stereoscopic thingy that everyone turns off due to headaches and looking bad in comparison to regular "2D"

Presumably they mean 3DS titles or games that work with 3D TVs, rather than games with polygons and such.

OT: Looks like a load of crap, to me. But then again I've long-since given up hope on reading something even vaguely interesting on IGN that wasn't a walkthrough.

How are single player games going to end? Some games are about stories, I know this concept might sound really alien to some people, and that doesn't work in a multiplayer setting.

My thoughts on the points
The Next Evolution of Motion Controls
Yer, there'll most likely be new motion control systems. Don't think that horse is dead yet

Star Trek Holodecks in Your Living Room
Yeah, can see something like this evolving. Maybe not quite holodeck tech, but close enough to earn the name

Performance Capture Technology Will Surpass Hollywood
Yeah, I can see movement capturing being more "normal" than other forms of animating, as it allows to pick any person you like to provide accurate movements. Ofc, there could be something that means people go back to pure code.

Always-Connected Gaming Experiences
Yep, online stuff is going to evolve. Nothing really spectacular here, revelation-wise

Conquering The Uncanny Valley
I can see this happening some time.

Games Will Make You Happy
Not sure if this'll ever be as successful as they hope for. Human states of mind are fickle things.

Single-Player Gaming Will End
Can't see single-player games entirely dying. How many of us play online-capable games in singleplayer modes? Who wants a story-based gamed ruined by that idiot who likes to yell "TITTIES" and "PENIS" all the time?
Yeah, there are more multiplayer gamers than there ever was, but I'm pretty sure that'll plateau out, and there's still going to be demand for singleplayer action.

Games Will School You
Um, is there any true future revelation in this bit that has anything to do with the title?
Banging on about threedee in this bit.

2D Gaming Will Become Retro
Possible, if someone comes up with a 3D technology that doesn't have massive downsides. So far, I'm not really seein' it. A lot of it is "fake" 3D which can mess badly with a good chunk of people's heads, so it doesn't really work.

Virtual Reality
OK, this is the holodeck point repeated. Isn't the holodeck basically VR? ><

No more Single Player? Suuuuuure. SP will continue to live. I doubt this article means much anyway.

The Next Evolution of Motion Controls
Possibly. Motion controls got a lot of attention this generation but didn't exactly blow any minds. Even the Kinect has sort of fizzled since its launch, despite Microsoft hyping it to hell and back. They aren't going anywhere, but I think they are going to get downplayed from a selling point to something that is just there (kinda like the PS3's Dual Shock controller).

Star Trek Holodecks in Your Living Room
Unlikely. Far far far too expensive. However, we may very well see holographic TV displays, which is something similar.

Performance Capture Technology Will Surpass Hollywood
Its almost there already. Pixar's movies already look absolutely incredible despite being done completely in CG, and games like L.A. Noire and Madden have shown that motion capturing can most definitely blur the line between between the fake and real thing. Given a few years of development, we may very well see actors making movies without ever being shot by a camera. Imagine getting a pretty face and body actor with the motion captured stunts of a professional karate expert. No more wires, no more obvious stunt doubles. Their own body (or a convincing facsimile) doing the stunts; no need for training.

Always-Connected Gaming Experiences
Duh. Its been that way since Steam and Xbox Live first hit the scene. Heck, even before them with arcade games that had carry overs to home consoles (like F-Zero). Its just becoming more and more all-inclusive. If anything, the progress will come in the form of cross-platform inter-connectivity. Imagine a game like Street Fighter 4, only with the ability to watch replays and see leaderboards from ALL platforms, not just the one you are on. Thats just a start.

Conquering The Uncanny Valley
Again, high-tech motion capturing will get us there. Games like Mass Effect have already made it possible with non-human characters, and L.A. Noire has shown us that a character can look like a real person. They just need to make it a litle less jarring.

Games Will Make You Happy
Not quite sure what they mean by this. Games already make people happy, don't they? And plenty of research has already been done into reward systems and such that make gamers want to keep playing and playing, like WoW for example.

Single-Player Gaming Will End
I believe definitive, sealed away from the outside world SP is on its last legs. However, actual single player campaigns and such aren't going anywhere. Think of Demon's Souls and its player tips, or Fable and its connected worlds that you could jump between. Stuff like that is going to become more and more common.
