This Christmas, I'm gonna treat myself and get a new laptop, but I want a really good spec one. Does anyone have any good sites where I can get all that for quite cheap?

Yeah agree with the other guy, I originally had this plan in my head but their way to expensive for what will basically fail to handle high spec games. Just upgrade your pc.

I have a gaming laptop (Toshiba Qosmio). And to be honest, unless you need or desperately want a laptop and be able to play games, I'd recommend just getting a gaming desktop for a fraction of the price. This thing is insanely bulky, and I only got it because it was a floor model and had a $700 price tag instead of the normal $1400 one.

Ok It is true deskops are kings of gaming, but having a gaming laptop is not bad - you can lan much easier - which is was makes PC gaming so fun in the first place. I have a gaming laptop and a really high end desktop but that is because hardware is my hobby and my research area.

I feel that now is a great time to buy a gaming laptop because the prices are more or less inline with what they should be, and mostly because every game that comes out now a days is aimed at multiple platforms. That being said if you get a lap top that can run new games well - it will have that power for at least a few more years - until the next generation of consoles come out.

Other tips I can give:
Get a 17 inch or larger. cheaper - more value for money - and that what a gaming laptop needs.
Dont be afraid to mod it if you know how to - I got mine for 1500 brand new 2 years ago and I immediately swapped out the ram for faster ram and more of it (8gb), and the harddrive with one that spins at 7,200 rpm at newest SATA transfer standard.

Lastly MAKE SURE you get a 64bit OS running on it. You have know idea the gains you'll get.

And again if you don't LAN a lot and play with a lot of friends - a desktop will probably be better for you.

www.newegg.com - best site in the world for this stuff.

Thanks guys for the desktop brigade. I don't really want a desktop because 1) Laptops are easier to carry round 2) They're more sociable and 3) I live in halls in Uni, a laptop I can socially get away with, if I get a desktop, you get landed in the, he's a gaming fag category and my social life is too imprtant to me.

Also I would mod, but the parts that sell toshiba bits don't like you doing that.

I use an XPS M1530, and I love it to death. If you do get one like mine, you really need something to keep it up off your desk/whatever while gaming. If you don't, it overheats.
And yet I would still cuddle my machine to sleep every night if there wasn't the risk of me breaking it.
But! If budget is of absolutely no concern whatsoever...Go here and have fun [http://www.sagernotebook.com/default.php]

Welcome to The Escapist.

Place of escapism for "gaming fags"!
I'm a gaming fag in disguise as a not gaming fag. I do rowing, clubbing, the lot.

I do not know.
All I can really tell you is that the ventilation is not up to keeping the laptop cool if it's on a solid surface and you play games any more graphics-intensive than solitaire X-D

Not yet you haven't!
There are also games with actual music in the background!
And some let you play as other species! It's so strangely amazing!

I also own an M1530, and recommend it. I use 4 GBA/DS plastic carry cases that came with my DS (which I never use) to stop it overheating. Other than that relatively minor issue, the laptop has been able to run most games (sadly TF2 has been a bit slow since the classless update). The only game it has really struggled with so far has been Crysis Wars, but playing Microsoft Powerpoint Crysis Wars is very funny at LAN's so I persist with trying to get melee kills.

Oh.
My.
A gosh.

I just wanted to play Solitaire without the slightest chance of a slow down in card dealing speed. But there is a whole gaming genre. Tell me more about this fantastic world.

Thanks for the recomendation, but the thought of a laptop consistantly overheating, causing my inevitable infertility as a result is not appealing to me.

Have you thought about turning the brightness down?

I was so happy to find out I could run Crysis on high...I seriously jumped in the air and pumped my fist X-D
And if you ever get sick of the GBA cases? A cookie cooling rack(new one preferably) works beautifully!

Oh, I'd love to!
But the characters in them said they'd come kill me in my sleep if I spoke about them.
And...they have to be real, right?
I mean, why else would they be in a game? I'm sure that it had to be based off of reality!

I'm typing this on a laptop that can run Crysis on very high, and one that cost me some serious $$$. I've used it only a few times as an actual laptop, and when I have, it's super hard to manage. I love it for games, but looking back on it, I think it would have made more sense for me to just get a better, cheaper desktop and a net-book, or something comparable. That's my opinion, anyways. You can certainly find a happy medium between a laptop and a gaming laptop, and I could post some of the ones I looked at buying, but I would really recommend taking the advice of some of the other posters in this thread and avoid buying a gaming laptop, however enticing they sound.

It would be far better you use that money for a gaming desktop. While gaming laptops fulfill there purpose adequately (I use this laptop for some gaming), gaming should be a secondary use for picking out a laptop not a primary one.
