After an especially cumbersome semester at college, I desperately awaited the summer holidays to once more ignite my love for gaming, and playing great games. While the love was there, sadly, great games weren't.

The first thing I did was to wipe the dust of my good old Xbox 360, brought new rechargeable batteries, bought two extra controllers (for some buddies), bought a new headset, got the 1-yr Live membership, new HDMI cables, and my subscription of Game Fly. My summer was set, and I was all ready to play some great games. But here is where it all started to go down: MW2 turned out cherry-pie filled not with delicious goodness, but inflated with bland air (even farts would have been more exhilarating); Assassins Creed turned out be nothing but Google Maps: Italian Renaissance Edition; L4D2 only wanted to make me watch Shaun of the Dead; BBC2 turned out be an endless wave of cheesy one-liners and wise-ass remarks, and oh, it was even grimier than MW2--if that's possible; Fable 2 just felt like masturbation session in which I was almost at the peak, but never attained that; FIFA 10 gave me control of players just about as maneuverable fully-laden shopping cart.

And this is just the list of the "good" games that I played. And now, the summer is nearly over, the school is about to start, and I'm frustrated to no-end. I seriously don't know what to do any more, I just can't find "fun" in the good games, and I'm way too scared to buy games that receive anything below an 8.0 on Steam, because let's face it, if "5-star" games are so shitty, the rest must really be scraping the bottom of the shit barrel.

The last gaming "experience" I felt was when I played Portal.

The only game I'm looking forward too, now, is Fable III. Because like I said, it's predecessor was pleasurable, but the experience was just left unfinished.

Any way to get out of this gaming Limbo? Or should I just do something useful with my life?

Get out of your gaming limbo with Limbo![/pun] *Whack* Ow! Okay, you said you had friends? Try some multiplayer XBLA games. Castle Crashers and the new multiplayer Castlevania game are both good choices.

I guess maybe this is your problem; your expectations are either sky-high (these are, after all what you claim to be "5-star") and thus you're unable to enjoy the game because you feel it's not as great as you thought it would be, or the games themselves are so similar to those you've played before (as is most often the case with AAA games) that you're unable to re-discover the same feeling as when you played Portal. I'd say take a chance on a lesser known game; there're some great diamonds in the rough to be discovered - perhaps try a new genre?

Yeah, I was thinking of getting Star Craft 2, because the last RTS I played was AoE III (it sucked). Also, any recommendations? Because seriously, I wasted a pile load of money this summer and thus am in a no mood to experiment, and doubly so because school opens in 2 weeks.

EDIT: World of Goo was actually pretty fun. But I don't think I did justice to my 6gb-core i7-gtx 480 computer.

Tricked you? How?
I thought this thread was about Limbo :3
My apologies, and if you would accept it, yours is perhaps the cutest avatar I've seen on the Escapist.

Well I can't really speak for what you'd like (after all the games you listed in your OP were of a wide-assortment of genres), I can only name the games I stumbled across whilst searching on steam; those being "The Longest Journey" franchise primarily. The series is a pair of adventure games (both on steam as a pack) with a very strong emphasis on narrative and puzzle solving - though I've discovered the original is very well received by most gamers; you said you're not really interested in experimenting but if you feel like it I'd recommend that pair.

On the 360 side of things you mention you enjoyed Fable II to a degree; perhaps you'll find NIER, a similarly styled JRPG to be interesting?

Finally, if you're yet to play it - I'd highly recommend Alan Wake.
