I noticed something happening these past few years with subtle game mechanics that are copied endlessly on every AAA game.
For example
Prince of Persia (2d) was the first game to popularize climbing, traps etc which directly lead to Tomb Raider in 3D which led to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time which lead to the entire genre of free running action adventure platformers.
God of War had QTE boss fights, cut scenes, not new but improved from the time of Dragon's Lair, RE4/Tomb Raider/PoP then copied the QTE's.
RE4 introduced the behind the shoulder camera which is now a must have for every action game from MGS4 to Uncharted 2 to Gears of War. No idea who invented the switching of the shoulder sides.
Uncharted 2, Batman and Assassin's Creed II released in the same year after 3-5 years of production all featured Ledge stealth kills. Not sure which Ninja game invented that. But some of the stealth kills are exactly the same. (Game Devs sharing info)?
So what game mechanic have you noticed subtly invading every game?
