There's often talk about casual gamers (often with snarky voices), and hardcore gamers, like that's something we should all aspire to.

Is there a middle ground? Someone who is more than casual, but not really hardcore? Because I don't feel I belong on either side, having to divide my time and attention between a lot of things.

Well, yes.

But the arguments are between the people perceived to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. But most of the hate, from what I see, is one-way. With hardcore gamers asserting that casual gamers are 'not real gamers', but I don't really hear bile heading in the other direction.

Maybe I am not looking in the right places, but it doesn't seem like a real argument to me. Only one side is properly involved.

It's more of just public smearing.

Personally, I don't see why anyone should marginalise their gaming prospects to adhere to some redundant categorisation.

Arent most people that, I mean, the idea of a casual gamer is one that plays those very easy to get in games that dont require much effort with the mentality that he will only play it as a distraction, the hardcore is basicly the opposite.

A lot of games dont really require that much effort mentally, if you think you are hardcore there will always be someone else that did play EVE or Dwarf Fortress.

With that said there is nothing wrong with being in either extremes or in the middle as long as you dont insult the people that arent part of it.

Anybody writing and commenting on the issue is probably in the middle of it. The definition of casual and hardcore implies either that they don't care to take gaming as an issue to be attacked or defended, or they simply have no time or interest in doing anything other than name-calling.
