The megaman games usually have a kick-ass sound-track; especially the 8-bit ones. I've only played Megaman 9, but most of its music can be summed up as 'a metric asston of pure gold'. I think the Wily Castle 1 theme in Megaman 2 is also on the top of many people's lists, for good reason.

Half-Life also has some epic numbers; especially the 'Vortal Combat' music in HL2:Ep2, and the airboat chase section in Half-Life 2.

Oh, and the finale in Dark Carnival in L4D2 is frigging sweet, too.

Then there's some great numbers in Sonic Adventure 2 (I played the version on the Gamecube).

I remember the Crysis games having some damn good music to it; especially the menu theme from Crysis: Warhead.

Brutal Legend is pure gold as well, but since it uses an assortment of rock and metal music, that one's kind of a given.

As a whole? Mirror's Edge/Tales of Vesperia/Any final fantasy game.

However, after kicking ass as Spetsnaz on CoD 4 a few times, I slowly realized something I should have all along, they played a really cool sounding song.

And after looking it up I found this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdVTVR-j0Q

I'm no communist/Stalinist, but that is a very inspiring/jubilant song. Almost eerily like some church hymns.

Tales of Symphonia (plus Dawn of the New World, especially for "<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-sKpfNVbbM&feature=related>With Courage...and especially for "<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu-2p6Vsbds&feature=related>Wilderness of Sadness"). Or possibly Baten Kaitos (plus Origins, especially for "<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKPxXRbYl6s>Iconoclasm" and "<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz-jFRuvA2o&fmt=18>Le Ali Del Principio").

Yeah, I love Nobuo Uematsu's work ("<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1JgIg38QBU>To Zanarkand" is one of a handful of songs guaranteed to make me cry), but I halfway worship Matoi Sakuraba as a composing demigod for those two series.

Other spectacular soundtracks...Devil May Cry 3 and A Drug That Makes You Dream. I might draw some stares for that last one, but every piece (every piece) is perfectly atmospheric and fits the game unbelievably well. It's also got another of the handful of songs guaranteed to make me cry ("<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdzP5SF0We8>On the Moonlit Rooftop").

The Command & Conquer games (pre-Generals, anyway)

You can listen to most, if not all, of the soundtrack at the composer's website.

I am totally in agreement, I love his star wars music. I almost want to reinstall that game just to listen to it but I fear my computer would hate me if I did that.

This. The soundtrack for the C&C games, particularly Red Alert 1 + 2 were awesome.
I also loved the Legend of Zelda soudtrack.

Honourable Mentions to Halo and World in Conflict

My favorite is America McGee's Alice. The music was done by Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails.

SSX 3 had a GREAT soundtrack, of course the songs really had no meaning in makeing anything feel tence since its a arcady racing game.

For a more cinimatic soundtrack made to make different emotions im torn between AC2 and Halo 3 ODST.

The Elder Scrolls 3 and 4 had beautiful music courtesy of Jeremy Soule.
The Hitman games as well courtesy of Jesper Kyd and a Symphonic Orchestra (Budapest, I think?).
Splinter Cell had The Crystal Method.
Guitar Hero 4 had fucking Tool.
Morrowind had some good music for sure, don't really remember Oblivions. Tool is amazing but can you really count a music game for a good soundtrack? I personally loved the soundtrack to Bioshock, I don't really think any other music in a game has stood out to me as much as that one.

Also I love your avatar. PT is the greatest band ever!

There is no best video game soundtrack. There are tons of games with very good soundtracks, but there is no ultimate one.

But on the subject of video game soundtracks, I have to say Valve did a great job with Left 4 Dead 2. If only because most of it differs greatly from video game soundtracks I've heard.
