Hello people of the escapist, I'd like to get your opinion on peripherals if you dont mind? that would be lovely thank you.

Back in my day, we had two joypads in the household, and if was a happy time, the joypad had not one button, not three and a half buttons, but TWO yes TWO whole buttons and a d pad. And it was great. And if you had more money than Scrooge mcDuck you had a steering wheel for that single racing game you had.

Recently with the influx of Guitar Hero's guitar, Tony Hawk skaty thingie board, Rock Bands drums, Singstars Mic, Wii's errr errr EVERYTHING i've noticed (yeah i'm good at noticing shit) some peoples houses are filled with gaming devices designed for one game and made of cheap Korean plastic (and made for one game only).

What are your thoughts on this?, having all this crap everywhere for a certain game.

analogy alert;
I for one do not like having a dedicated toilet paper required for wiping my ass of a certain solidity of poo. So why must there be a bat for a wiimote?

I understand the guitar hero guitar, lets call that the "quilted" because its not needed but its nice to have.

Fair enough with the guitar but the other extras are just there for the money. Of course, the companies could always say that they were trying to give the game more of a feel but we all know the real reason.

They could easily incorporate a microphone into the sixaxis or the Xbox controller. The skateboard is ridiculous. The drums, fair enough. The steering wheel, not worth it. Just stick to using the controller.

When guitar hero came out on ps2 it was a major success so all the other companies were like "Omg we want money too!" so everyone joined in and now we are being forced to buy every blood accessory for every game. But meh thats how business works.

For me, I don't buy anything unless i want it so it doesn't really affect me coz i haven't bought a guitar hero game since the first one

Edit: Hopefully they will realise that this market has become extremly saturated sometime soon so that they can get back to making good old fashioned joy-pad enabled games :)

The only thing I ever liked was the good old gun for Duck Hunt. I seriously do not think I have had anything since a normal controller/mouse+keyboard since then.

I was a big fan of Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution in the past, so I let those slide whenever I see them in someone's house. Pretty much any Wii accessory is stupid to waste money on, and racing wheels are pretty lame as well.

I stopped playing my Wii at the time that there were more peripherals being released than good games. I am very much anti-peripheral.

Wouldn't be saying that if you were playing a game like Grand Prix Legends or GTR Evolution. You need a decent force-feedback steering wheel for these games, because otherwise, they'll kick your ass so hard you'll be tasting intestine.

My thoughts on external peripherals is that there are only a few games which actually need them, but when they need them, they really need them. These titles mainly fall into the lines of the simulator genre, including racing simulators and flight simulators. They're niche games, but I can say that I really did need a steering wheel for GTR Evolution, because any controller would not have the necessary precision and feedback to allow me to play the game properly.
I completly forgot, while I waxxed lyrical and bitched about console peripherals I completly forgot I actually own this > http://www.saitek.com/UK/prod/x52.htm
But thats not a toy, its enhancement.

The Zapper was awesome, and the Wii peripheral that lets you hold the remote like one is similarly cool. Most of the time, it seems like peripherals are unneeded, but things that are already cool (guns/guitars apparently) make good peripherals because you will have a fun time using them anyways.

Does anyone remember, or have, the $400 Steel Battalion controller?

Any Gaming Peripheral + Gaming PC = Great.

Imagine using the Duck Hunt gun in call of duty.

Watch this. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWtCklcYy8s] Notice how his hands are darting all over the place to keep the car under control? You can't do that with a bloody controller.

(BTW, he's reaching 220-230mph on that 5km-long straight, and then, he has to slow down to about 30mph for the end. The other corners are similarly abrupt, and then, we have the Porsche Curves. Basically, you can't control a realistically-handling car on the Porsche Curves with a controller.)

I'm pretty jealous. All I have is this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.83541#1166734].
I can't compare since i've never used your joystick, but my thingie is sublime, I only use it for one game.... A10 cuba, but its so worth it.

I had a couple of others, they were below par in retrospect, but great at the time.
