I was quite torn on whether to put this in the gaming discussion forum or here in the Off-topic forum. Feeling that it would see more traffic I have opted to place it here so that a greater number of people will be able to participate.

Due to circumstances beyond our control KeyMaster45 will not be speaking in the OP of this thread, instead a stand-in will take his place. The giant Albino Ninja Badger named Fred.

Since the day the first gamer picked up a controller and played pong in the smoke filled haze of his basement people have played games with definitively different approaches and motives. In today's world of online gameplay, endless customization, stunning graphics, and Peter Molo...Molenew...Petey; these have stayed foundationaly the same, but on much grander scales.

In my experiences I have found that you can split gamers into essentially three basic groups. Something that yes, was done long before I came around, but I would like to explore this in a different manner.

What motivates these three base personalities of gamers.

  • 1.The Completionist:Their greatest objective in any game is to do everything no matter how hard or how ridiculous. Tell them dropping a cow into a volcano will give them an achievement and they'll begin think of how. The glory of being able to say they did that gives them the greatest satisfaction. I.E. They like to have the Epeen.

    2. The Gladiator: If at the end of the day they haven't made at least one person cry then they haven't done their job right. Hoping against hope that every game they play will have a multiplayer option their greatest satisfaction comes from being the one ruling from atop the mountain of bones when all is said and done. Being able to look at someone and tell them "L2P nublet" after they've delivered a headshot is what floats their boat.

    3. The Personifier: At the behest of their ruler the personifier charges into conflict seeking adventure. They live through their characters and share the triumphs and failures. If when they go to bed the princess is still in danger they will not sleep well. Given a choice between the doldrums of life in the real world or the wonder and adventure of fiction they've already got their +12 [Hammer of Smashing] polished and ready for battle.

I ask you now not simply which one you fit into, as the boarders between them are quite blurred in some places, but WHY you fit into them. What is it that drives you to have these goals. In the end all of it is quite pointless to the confines of time and space that we perceive to be our reality, so why do we take on these base masks when we game?

Well more often then not I will put myself in the tourist seat just to take in the sights and see what it has to offer. In to see what the game becomes more often then not then after anything else really.

I'm occasionally a griefer; I make a nice foil to all of the archetypes listed above.

The reason is simple: it is hilarious to watch a CoD: WaW server degenerate into a noob tubing, trolling frenzy.

Amazingly I have never been banned once.
I am usually a nice enough person to play with...

I'm probably 'The Completionist'. Achievements can often involve doing things or going places in that game you might overlook otherwise, so it gives the incentive to explore and enjoy a fuller experience in that game. More fun for your money =]

hmmm... why is there no social option...

but i guess its 2 & 3...
3 because i value character creation above anything else, although most rpgs tend to bore me... i only like the really good ones.
2 because i play fighting games obviously... judging by the amount of hate mail i get... id be wrong to say im not this type... even though its unintentional... and im not even elitist in anyway :< im actually a nice person... just cause you dont know how to block, does not mean im typical, over-agressive, 5-years of age, american, or squeaky. nor do i want a halo 1v1 with you.

1, or achievement whore types, annoy me...

tbh you missed some sides... theres plently more dimentions... and thats just me...

I'm all three.

Completionist: Achievement whore. I admit it.

Gladiator: Must..... not...... kill...... Not...... resisting....... well........ *Kills a puppy*

Personifier: I get immersed waaaaaaaaaaaaay too easily. In some of my long sessions, I forget I'm human.

I fit somewhere in between 1 and 3. I OBSESS over getting my $60 worth out of games.I get as much gamerscore that I can, but I don't go for IMPOSSIBLE ones. As for 3, I play games to escape (hence the Escapist) and I'm really into the characters and immersion.

I'm definetly NOT 2, 2 is usually someone that I hate. I know so many people that only have a console so they can blindly play the newest Call of Duty or Halo online. They won't buy a game unless it has a gun on the front cover. You look at their achievements and 9 out of 10 times there only ones are "beat the tutorial" and then a bunch of online ones. It bugs the crap out of me.

I am a mix between 2 and 3. Why not go on an epic adventure, then halfway through, someone joins via Xbox live and you pound their skull into the dirt. Thats basically me. Multiplayer AND single player obsessive. but not an acheivement whore. thats my brother, id say.

he will spend weeks getting an acheivement, in fact he bugged me into beating the co-op campaign of gears of war 2 on insane via xbox live. Im currently doing it with him, and lemme tell you, I think my brother has gone insane. Too bad I was only talking to him via the mic's, becuase he was probably FROTHING at the mouth.

I match both 2 and 3, when I'm online (and occasionally even off) I'm not satisfied unless I'm the top of the score board and on the winning team. When offline, I get really sucked into the game and story, but never to the point where I get delusional and believe I'm really going off to save a princess. Occasionally I slip into 1, but often only on those boring days where I'm searching for something to do, and if I set off to complete an achievement I make sure I complete it... unless I get bored and tired of it and go to do something else.

I was only going for basics in this, many more dimensions to the personalities indeed exist. For simplicity's I left out socialization because it goes hand in hand with the three archetypes already listed. In my mind a socialization archetype is rather superfluous archetype when looking at the raw basics of video games.

Also I happen to like the number three, its a nice round number with no middle that doesn't have a decimal.

I guess I'm a mixture of the 3.

Type 1) I like to complete things so I can speak from experience. I've played through some truely awful games just so I can rant about how the whole game is awful and well, once I've started something, I seldom quit. Except smoking but I only did that for a week.

Type 2) I play Final Fantasy XI and there's a part of me that wants to be some all-knowing being. Like if someone wants to know how to do something, they come to me. This whole thing is flawed by my insistance on having a life and not really playing the game that much... and the fact that I hate pretty much everyone I meet on that game.

Type 3) Much like the first one, I like to see things through and I'll refuse to stop playing if I haven't reached a nice stopping point. This is unless real life stuff is going down, but sleep can always wait. If all else fails, I'll tell everyone I was out drinking the night before.

Completionist for me. I like to beat games 100%, which involves getting all achievements. Unless they're completely beyond reason, like Seriously 1 and 2 in the Gears game, or all the stupid flags in Assassin's Creed. As long as it's fun, I don't mind a challenge.

I'm the Personifier. I always love getting immersed into my games especially sandbox games where I can do whatever I want.

I am the Tank.

The Tank is one who must finish the game, not paying much attention to side-details.
Now, when I buy a game, I will play it until I beat it. And since I don't spend much time doing anything but the main storyline, or main quest, I get it done reasonably quick.

If I actually do have to pick one of the three, it would be the Completionist, only after I beat a game once, then I will beat it completely. For example, I spent over 600 hours 100%-ing Oblivion. Although that was because I was laid up for 6 weeks.

I am more of a 'wannabe completionist' as I set such goals, but often get distracted by something else to ever finish. Though achievements have helped me get better, I have yet to complete most personal TES goals. (In Morrowind I tempted to get a complete collection of souls, even getting more than half the Dagoths, but never came close to finishing)

The personifier I think is me too, not sure, but I think that can be summed up as Role Player which I am quite into, and could write volumes about TES involving my many characters, even without the actual game. (ie between game connections, their histories, I even have a date of birth for my main character)

Ok, I see that alot of you are picking archetypes and given reasons why you fit them, but I guess the question I'm trying to get across to you guys is what drives you to be the king of the pile, or the player who's beaten X boss with one hand tied behind their back while tapping on the escape key the entire fight.

All of our reasons are "Well, because its fun" but why is it fun to you personally.

I suppose if I must choose from those, I'm closest to the Personifier. I play games for the fun of doing awesome stuff that can't actually be done in real life.

I'm closest to the Personifier, though I do have bouts of Completionist tendencies for games I really like. The biggest value to a game (for me, of course) is the escapism. I could easily play certain games for hours upon hours. They feed my creativity and give me a break from the real world.
