Warning: this will likely just turn into a rant.
So why is it a load of games just randomly decide to turn the fucking difficulty up off the scale out of nowhere? You'll be going along, getting through the game. Yeah it's pretty challenging, but you can handle it. Then out of absolutely nowhere you get dropped into the middle of hell with no time to prepare and you have to try and fight through a situation that is pretty much near-impossible.
The game that sparked this annoyance off for me was Half-Life 2. More importantly, the first time you have fight Striders. God forbid the game ease you in gently, making you fight one Strider on its own first. OH NO! That's not how Valve roll. Instead you go from fighting Combine, which is easy cause you've been doing it all game, to "just kill these 2 Striders in an open area." But it's okay, cause according to an annoyingly friendly NPC who then swiftly dies due to AI ineptitude, they've left a crate of unlimited rocket ammo in the Plaza. Finding this crate when under heavy fire from 2 fucking Striders, however, is conveniently not adressed. And then when you finally somehow manage to bring those 2 motherfuckers down, a 3rd Strider mysteriously arrives, and by this point the other 2 have killed EVERYTHING human in sight besides you, so it's only focusing it's fire on you and you alone. AND the crate of unlimited ammo is nowhere to be seen because apparently the NPCs enjoy fucking scavenger hunts when under heavy fire.
*pants and uses inhaler* So, erm...discussin value. Okay...oh, I know! What games that you've played have randomly cranked the difficulty up to 11 for an utterly arbitrary gameplay section?
