My parents are not gamers. My mom used to play The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. on our NES back in the day. Occasionally growing up, my dad and I would play Rush 2, or Star Fox on the N64. Overall, my parents are confused and annoyed with games in general. Today however, was different. My dad came over to visit, and saw that I had been playing Just Cause 2. He watched me play it for a few minutes, and then insisted on playing it for himself. After ages of getting comfortable enough with the controls to wreck a car, he began to really enjoy himself. He ended up playing for almost two hours. The funniest thing to me, was the fact that my dad is very conservative, frowning upon violent games, and yet within a few minutes of playing, he was splattering civilians across the front of his jeep, laughing maniacally. Here are some of the quotes from my dad during his time gaming:

"Hahaha, civilians! BOOM!"
"Poop, I grenaded myself again"
"Stop making me shoot! Joel how do I stop shooting?! What trigger?! Controllers have triggers?"
"Hahaha, I almost mounted that Tug-boat"
"Why aren't there more Tug-boats out here, this is an industrial area?"
"He has a lot of parachutes in his backpack, huh?"
"Tug-boats aren't good for racing."

It was one of the funniest sites I've ever beheld, especially his fascination with Tug-boats. So I ask you, fellow Escapists, do your parents game? Do they game with you? Please share any stories or comments.

Not really. My dad used to. He was the first person in our house to beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Super Mario Bros.

But when the controllers started getting too many buttons he stopped. He still plays PC games every now and then. He likes very simple FPS games and I think he still plays Wolfenstein.

He did ask for a PS2 for Christmas to play Fight Night, but I never see it plugged into the T.V. so I think he might be done with the console gaming.

My dad use to. He played a lot of racing games and flight sims, then he got into the original Half-Life.

His recent games were Far Cry 1, Crysis, Doom 3, COD 1, and Enemy Territory.

And that's it.

My dad shows a little interest in games, but he never plays them.

My mom only likes Galaga. She can get through like 20 stages on one quarter, it's crazy. Even after nearly 30 years, she still remembers where all the enemies spawn for the fist 10 or so stages.

My dad loves games. We live in separate states now so how we talk to each other is on XBL. We play L4D2 and Halo together a lot. He loves war games which I'm not really into. He is probably on XBL more than me.

When I was a kid there was a few Atari and C64 games my mom was really good at. Beyond that we just played a few board games and did crossword puzzles together. (I miss those days.) I have an aunt who's big into portables - only reason I owned a Gameboy is because she gave me hers after upgrading to a Gameboy Color.

But if you want gamers, you should talk to my buddy's parents. While they're strictly into strategy games, they will kick your ass from here to Hell and back again at anything on the market. My buddy laments that despite being a "proper" gamer, his parents upgrade their PCs more than he does for gaming reasons!

HOLY CRAP we have the same name O_O I thought I was the only Joel :O

OT: My dad is also very conservative, yet strangly the sheer epicness of God of War III got him interested.... I may have to watch him in case he gets vengeful..

I love Galaga! That game is so.... I can't describe it, sorry.

My dad used to play Cricket Captian '02 occasionally, but apart from that, no.

My dad is a HUGE PC gamer. Unfortunately, I never game with him, because I am a console gamer, and the only PC game I play is Battlefield 2.

When I was 10 I tried to make my dad play star wars battlefront with me.
It did not end well.
That game is awesome! I used to kill all my friends on it and they refused to play me.

I tried to teach my mom Gears of War and Mirror's Edge, two very different games. She sucked at both and actually said "You need to use more then three buttons?!?!?". The only game she is good at is Tetris, I think her record is level 63.

my parents started playing video games when we got an atari my dad's fav was the shuttle simulation game. my mom got into video games when the nes came out she played super mario till the game broke and she is the only person i know of that has truly beaten guantlet for the nes. when we got the sega my dad played super street fighter turbo with me all the time and he was pretty good. mom started playing sonic the hedgehog and owned all the games even the obscure ones, when the ps one came out they stopped playing console games and started playing pc games mainly flight sims. my two brothers and i roleplayed alot with our various friends, played many different rpgs but eventually settled on palladium games parents tried a few times but never really got into it they would rather listen to us than actually rpg. when planetside came out they got back into playing video games, they were pretty badass at planetside my mom was one of the best gunners for any vehicle and my dad was a pretty good sniper. all they play now is world of warcraft, and i mean all the time my dad is partially retired and has four characters at level eighty and his main is a gnome protection warrior with top of the line gear minus the 25 man raid gear. my mom is almost as bad with 4 characters at level eighty and a priest in tier 9 raid gear. all in all they have come a long way from when they first started and i don't see them stopping till they can no longer hold a controller in their hands.

My Mom actually gets motion sick from playing video games, or at least that is her excuse. Me and my dad would play Kirby's Airride and SSBM on the gamecube now and then. He still loves to play Battlefeild 1942 and battlefeild 2 on the PC though.
