Gap years thread

Currently I'm slowly approaching my final year of high school with little idea of what to next year, I was wondering if a gap year would be a good idea especially travelling abroad (I'm english)

Anyway have any escapists been abroad on a gap year and could offer any suggestions

(ideally a working gap year)

I spent 6 months in China teaching English (no experience was needed, just being fluent in English and a little experience of working with/leading kids). As well as that I did 4 1/2 months of charity work in South Africa (split into 3 months and 6 weeks, at different times).

There are tons of organisations that do this type of thing, just google Gap Year and you'll find heaps of them. I would recommend either of the two things I did, if you like kids that is? What type of work is it you want to do?

I'd be happy with working with children but I'm unsure about spending time in a country without the language
