Garish Escapist Ads

I understand that the escapist runs ads and they've usually been so classy that I go out of my way to check them out (like the old beer & eve-online ads when it was more magazine style).

Recently there's been a batch of targeted ads (I know because I get them in Dutch) that look particularly garish compared to the nice design of the rest of the site or advertise in various underhanded ways. There's the fake greencard ad, that says you just won one and wants you to get a subscription to an expensive service that does nothing more than fillout the greencard lottery application for you, there's mobile ringtone subscription offers. Who would really buy 15 euros of ringtones each month if they knew that that's what they were buying? And there's a host of ads that lead to something very different than what you see.

They don't really fit with the escapists style.

The Escapists needs money, If it has to whore out a little with ads, then so be it. I'm quite happy to endure...

I dont mind the adds. I get them for pickup trucks, jeans, Footbal(NFL), and TD Bank. All things I own/use or might like to get one day.

Just ignore the damned ads. They can stretch the truth and then take you to some crap that you end up paying twice as much for because they automatically force you to "agree" to these other terms you didn't know about.

No it's not adware, I'm not talking about popups, but embedded ads on the escapist.

Yes they need money and the banner ads are quite nice, like the city kids foundation that I'm looking at right now. There's a boxed one though that when I get it (looks like a maze) it sometimes flashes or makes the screen flash. Not exactly subtle.

If I got the same ads as fluffyneurosis, I wouldn't be posting this.

If you use Firefox, get the AdBlock Plus add-on. It's free, and it's a learning blocker.
You can add the URLs of images to block all of the images from that source. It's great.

I haven't seen any ads at all, other than the ones that show up occasionally on the border of the screen. If you're talking about pop ups, I use firefox, so they're none of my concern.

The only ads I have are for the CityKids foundation (which, to my knowledge, is a charity) so I'm fine with that. They sit neatly in the corner anyway.

This was my thought. I've never had anything even remotely resembling what you've described. Mind you, I have Adblock Plus, but ads still appear on the sidebars of the forums since they're hosted on a server that ABP doesn't kill.

Before going search bar gestapo on people (and completely missing his point too) he didn't complain about there being ads, he complained about some crappy/borderline scammers ads.

And yes the ads are localized, the one i get 90% of the time is for BMO (Bank of Montreal)

There's also one that flashes black for a short moment every few seconds and also makes the screen flash black about once a minute.

Again, I don't experience this at any other site, during any other computer activity. I'm sure adblocker would stop these sites, but I don't use it, because I like seeing advertising when it's well placed (I think that's how I found the escapist and how I find most games that I like).

I don't like ads to ruin the tastefulness of a site though.
