If you want story just read wiki and lurk for warhammer lore in my opinion.
But Its up to you really.
Um what? No video games are involved at all...
@ OP:
The series is pretty good. I'd advise grabbing the Omnibuses - they're a great buy (I bought all the books as they came out in paper-back. Blimey is that expensive). I think there's 3 omnibuses now, and a few paperbacks that are too new (a new story-arc) to be in a collection just yet.
The first two books are a little confusing, but are all right. The third, Necropolis, is absolutely amazing. The next story arc is generally entertaining, but once you get into the (currently) final arc you can really see the improvements Abnett has made and the stories are far darker and more gripping than the early works.
In short, I highly advise buying them, except the first two books are a little naff compared to all the others - but still excellent by other Black Library standards.
It's all "war-porn" though. There are some pretty deep plots, and the stories do tend to be aimed at older Warhammer fans, but don't expect anything too heavy or high-class literature. I've got nothing against war-porn, it's highly entertaining and relaxing. If you want grimdark and explosions and good characterisation -without an overbearing "hero-factor" that other 40K stories carry- with a plot that is entertaining at worst, then grab the series.
