Gears 2 Producer Plays Killzone 2

It seems Gears of War 2 producer Rod Fergusson is sleeping with the enemy, as he admitted he's spent some time with Gears rival franchise and PS3 marquee shooter Killzone 2.

Whether you believe it or not, working on a big name exclusive franchise does not necessarily mean you have to live your life according to the console wars. Hideo Kojima enjoys his Gears of War. By the same token, the Blizzard guys enjoy some Warhammer Online (or at least some did last I heard). And Rod Fergusson, one of the top dogs at Epic Games when it comes to Gears of War, plays Killzone 2. Don't be so shocked.

"I play World of Warcraft," Fergusson told VG247 [http://www.vg247.com/2009/04/02/gears-2-dev-boss-i-play-killzone-2-but-i-dont-like-dead-space/]. "Most recently I finished 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, which was a lot of fun. I've been playing some Killzone, I've been playing some RE5."

I for one am most shocked that Fergusson has played and enjoyed Blood on the Sand, one of my favorite games of 2009 thus far. Even more surprising is the revelation of his compulsive Peggle habit. "I got through all 55 doors of Peggle on Xbox Live... I'm kind of all over the place in terms of games," he said.

All over the place he may be, but one place where he will not set foot is the horror genre. "I can't distance myself from things I'm watching, so I don't keep a professional distance," he said. "I'm the guy that cries in Bambi and jumps in thriller movies."

See, they don't have mass burnings of copies of Killzone 2 in the Epic parking lot. Myth debunked.

I didn't think that Killzone and Gears were exactly rival franchises. If one man sells fish only in Argentina and one sells fish only in Canada, are they competing against each other?

Of course, it's a bit more iffy here because these games are trying to attract new players to the console (I assume?) Although both are really just likely to attract those who already own the target console.

Only playing your own work would get very boring very fast. Who wouldn't play the competitions work, it would be both a good learning experience and more entertaining than playing the game you spent more than a year working on and know better than the back of your hand.

I applaud him for not being a fanboy to his own company. We should know that Gears of War isn't everything in life and some other shoot-em-ups need to be played, too.

But Killzone 2 is not a shoot'em up, it's a first (?) person shooter. Different genre.

GoW is a third person shooter, KZ2 is a first person shooter. The only real difference between them is camera perspective and a chainsaw gun.

That's the impression that I was under. They really didn't seem like "rivals" to me since they offer totally different gameplay styles.

Heresy! Our developers are betraying us to the hated forces of the PS3! [/sarcasm]
I don't like it any better than you do, 3-boi. It seems we'll have to do something about this blasphemy. I'm willing to work together this once to prevent this from ever happening again!

RE5 isn't in the horror genre?
No. Have you played it? It's an action game with a pretension to horror.
The only horror in RE5 for me was when I just looked at my "Records" page and noticed a whopping 30 hours that I am now working on getting S rank in all chapters/difficulties.

Other than that, it's pretty much on the same scare level as Uncharted.

I know what you mean. I'm in a unique position with that game; my 360's bricked, so I've been playing bits and pieces at a friend's house. Going over next weekend to finish the game for the first time, as well as get unlimited ammo for a few guns that I've upgraded fully. Thing is, it's been on his hard drive, so I'll have to do it all again when I get my 360 back.

Ouch, that must hurt.
It's actually possible to go through in quite a breeze as soon as you got any magnum with unlimited ammo and then getting the rocket launcher soon after.

Just getting the points for the upgrades is sort of a drag, especially as I am just not good enough to get SS ranks on mercenaries and with Riddick:AodA coming up at the end of this month, I better hurry.

Could hurt more; we've been playing Coop with him having unlimited ammo for the first magnum, and when I get my 360 back, he's going to do yet more coop over live with me, and he now has unlimited ammo for the most powerful magnum.

After seeing all those company reps bitching, it's nice to see something like this.
