Gears of War Meets Minecraft

An industrious Minecraft player built a visual representation of the lyrics to the song "Mad World" featured in the famous Gears of War trailer.

I will always remember this rendition of the song "Mad World" by Gary Jules from when I first saw Donnie Darko and it changed my world. Many gamers were introduced to the cover of the Tears for Fears track from the trailer for the first Gears of War back in 2006 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zHDKi4wbGE]. Regardless of where you first heard it, the melancholic tones evoke strong feelings and the lyrics are hauntingly poignant. As with any piece of art, translating those feelings into Minecraft blocks is the perfect way to display them to the world.

That's what YouTube user "Eire247" did with huge letters showing all of the lyrics for the first few verses of "Mad World" as a mine cart zooms by. The feat must have taken some time - and some creative editing - but the words are timed generally well to the music.

While it's not quite as evocative as ending montage in Donnie Darko [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4] or even the Gears trailer, I think I like it the best out of all three because it was made with heart.

And a diamond pick.

Oh god, if Donnie Darko changed the world it certainly wasn't for the better. Such an over-rated movie.*

*My ***** of an ex loves it, therefore I must hate it.

Ok I'll admit I laughed at the comments about the old lady checking her mail again and again.

Eh, I prefer Bad Company's, personally.

Still though, that video is really sweet.

I was expecting that to end with the cart hurtling off a cliff.

Good video, glad it didn't end the way I expected.

If Minecraft has taught me anything, it's that people have way too much time on their hands....

I know. Makes me want to build a Nether section into the big mined-out area under my fort, just to mimic the effect. Might cheat and level-edit one into place.:)

Also: Clever use of ice on that "ever" sign. I was wondering how he got his glass like that until I realized what it was.

The only 'strong feelings' Mad World evoked in me was how whiny and attention seeking that stupid song was. Honestly, even Moby's 'Why does My Heart feel so bad' pulls off the same trick better. There are plenty of songs out there that deal with melancholy in a much, much, better way, but everyone's hooked on Mad World just because of Donnie Darko.

Which, incidentally, is a crap film chock full of plot holes enshrouded in a bunch of mystical BS just to make people think it's deep. It's not.

I'm not seeing how this is gears of war meets minecraft. I didn't think Green Day battled the Transformers because of the music they used in their trailer. Although we can agree that would have been a really good movie.
