Geek Crickets

Yesterday in accounting class the professor asked the question "what's iGAAP?" (International Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). My snarky reply: "The latest app for accountants on their iPhones."

Crickets. Not even a chuckle from the room.

Rewind further to Wednesday afternoon. In Information Systems class the teacher said "what companies use portals?" (as in Web portals---she was looking for an answer like Yahoo, MSN, Google...) I said "Aperture Science." One person laughed, the rest were like "huh?"

For discussion: Have you ever caught yourself in web forum mode in non geek company and cracked a joke that would probably be really funny if, say, you told it here, but got nothing but crickets chirping in the room?

All the time. Actually way too often. I constantly make a reference to games and such and everyone just looks at me like "the fuck" and I'm like

*Sigh*, oh yes this has happened before. I'm studying Computer Science, and on the second day of school I tripped over a chord on the floor, but I managed to rescue myself from falling, after which I yelled - "I SEARCH FOR TRAPS!".

*Chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirp* in a class full of computer geeks. That made me feel inadequate!

I have made many many jokes and replies that reference a film directly.

However it seems I'm the only movie fan in my 6th form.

Why am I the only person to have seen Pulp Fiction?

My philosophy lecturer once asks his audience if any of us had played the game Mirrors Edge, as he was using the in-game footage to illustrate a point about epistemology.

Only one person, in a hall full of at least 100 people, raised their hand, and it was me.


And that single experience probably sums up all my problems with university...

I think some of my close circle have. We were in Pizza Express and I refused to tip the waiter because he didn't perform above average service. A friend then said "Alright then Mr Pink."

That was funny.

I'm not a big Tarantino fan but Reservoir Dogs was awesome.
