In my relatively short life {16 years}, I figure that deducing about three real gems of knowledge is pretty good when you can only reliably remember back three years or so, but i have nobody to compare it to, so...

If you had to choose, what would you say are the most important gems you have in your possession?

I'll start with the three i can think of, off the top of my head.

1: Libertarianism makes a whole damn load more sense then democratism, or republicanism.

2: Some people are stupid generally, some people are smart generally, but all people are stupid in some way or another.

3: Public schools are shit {I live in the US}.

A person is smart but people are stupid, dumb and dangerous.

The media lies to further it's own agenda, perhaps, to take over the world.

The best intentions for others always handicap your own progress on your current path, but every so often open newer and faster ways to happiness.

?Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.?

As well as the little bits of wisdom you are after. Learning never stops, situations change and so the little nuggegts of wisdom must change with them.

Maybe it used to be, but all this modern crap with cheesy lyrics about love has taken over.

Best music is done without words, in my opinion.

Albert Einstein: We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God.

True science investigates and brings to human perception such truths and such knowledge as the people of a given internal time and society consider most important. Art transmits these truths from the region of perception to the region of emotion.
Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), Russian novelist, philosopher. What Is Art? ch. 10 (1898; repr. in Tolstoy on Art, ed. by Aylmer Maude, 1924).

It is often said that men are ruled by their imaginations; but it would be truer to say they are governed by the weakness of their imaginations.
Walter Bagehot (1826-77), English economist, critic. The English Constitution, ch. 2 (1867).

Obviously the facts are never just coming at you but are incorporated by an imagination that is formed by your previous experience. internal Memories of the past are not memories of facts but memories of your imaginings of the facts.
Philip Roth (b. 1933), U.S. novelist. The Facts, opening letter to Zuckerman (1988).

The art of Peace I practice has room for each of the world's eight million gods, and I cooperate with them all. The God of Peace is very great and enjoins all that is divine and enlightened in every land.

Knowledge is half the battle.... the other half is lasers.
Don't get your nickers in a twist over offensive things, just laugh at their effort being pissed away.
Wisdom is realizing when to shut the hell up.

If you meet the buddha on the road, kill him.

Virtue with the intent of appearing virtuous is not virtue.

The wise man neither speaks nor dwells on his successes.

Shame and disgrace are the root of all fear, and what drives us to hesitate. If we no longer fear disgrace, then what is left to be afraid of?

Those who boast merely wish for something they do not have.

Speak without talking. Listen without hearing. Act without moving.

Climb the tallest mountain. Punch the face of god.

All I know is that I know nothing.

He isn't. Trust me, eight years ago (hell, even two years back) I thought that I was exceedingly intelligent, attentive, and thought provoking. Now, I can see that I was a fool, and though I'd like to say that I'm wiser than the average bear, I still am one.

You'll learn eventually. Or maybe not. Most folks never progress past age 14, anyhow.

is it not possible to become wise, and then a fool?

I don't understand why no one seems to consider that one might be wise and grow foolish afterwards

That is a true gem, I believe that to be true of most forum topics.

funny you should mention that, i don't think i've ever experienced that before. i remember going through the archives of a forum where i posted years ago and reading up on some of the discussions. in the middle of one of these discussions, there was this post where i just thought, "wow, i couldn't have put it better myself". i quickly glanced at who this person was, and to no surprise - it was me.

The single most noble, intelligent, progressive thing you can ever do...

Is doubt. Encourage doubt. Doubt your elders, doubt your beliefs, doubt even yourself. Nothing is certain. That isn't to say let your doubt become crippling - but at least think twice when you have the luxury.

Also, don't eat the green wobbly bit.
