These type of threads show up all the time, but always about a specific form of media. I'd like to see you give your top recommendations in five seperate types of media. I'd like you to name one offering each for books, film, television, music, and, of course, videogames. Mine are as follows:

Book - World War Z by Max Brooks
Best zombie themed book ever written, and damn good book all on its own.

Film - Die Welle (The Wave)
Subtitled german movie about the slippery slope of facism

Television - Generation Kill
HBO miniseries set during the second invasion of Iraq

Music - Settle Down by Kimbra
Tight, funky beat performed by a truly talented musician

Videogame - SpaceChem
Inspired game that can simultaneously make you fell smart and dumb

Videogame - Dungeons of Dredmor (rogue like dungeon crawler) or something from the Blazblue series (a 2D anime fighter)

TV - Parks and Recreation (A comedy based on NBC)

A criminally underrated author, dabbling in almost every genre. Modern vampirism done correctly.

Film: Law Abiding Citizen
Thrilling, clever and brilliantly paced. Also gory as fuck. Watch with a girl for added amusement.

Television: Game of Thrones is the one I'm recommending to all my friends. But for the Escapist, I recommend y'all go give New Girl a looksee.

I am very unlikely to stop recommending these guys at any chance I get. Joy Division in a generation of better production quality.

Blew me out of the water. Transcended everything I expected of a little top-down hack-and-slash to give me one of the most emotional gaming moments I've ever played through.

Book: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
It's a classic, it's unsettling and fascinating, and go read a better review somewhere else

Film: Yojimbo
Toshiro Mifune effortlessly matches Clint Eastwood in being a badass, but with a better sense of humor. The movie is inspired by the best of American hard boiled detective fiction (Red Harvest to be specific), with great characters, tons of excellent quotes, and a clever ending. Don't get turned away by the fact that it's a 50 year old black and white Japanese-language period piece.

TV: Friday Night Lights
If you can tolerate a little football here and there, you will get to see some of the most realistic and well acted characters on television, portrayed with warmth and emotion and put in storylines that typically avoid soapiness or sensationalism. Coach Taylor and Matt Saracen are two of the greatest characters in TV history.

CD: The Monitor by Titus Andronicus
Rousing, lengthy, anthemic punk songs inspired by Springsteen and the Civil War. Lots of the Civil War.

Game: Sly Cooper 2
They still need to make platformers. Mario will likely star in solid games until the sun goes out, but Sly is my case that there is very much still some spark in the genre

The Twenty-One Balloons [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twenty-One_Balloons]. Seriously, it's a charming story filled with fun visuals and characters that can easily fleshed out and made to work on screen without severely changing the substance of the story. It would be more of a "kid's movie," but man what a kid's movie it would be. And honestly, I think I'd give it to Disney, specifically the team who did Meet the Robinsons. That movie had just the right balance of fun and heart, exactly what the Twenty-One Balloons needs. There's also a neat existential question for them to grapple with. The book starts out explaining there are basically two types of journeys: a journey to get to a specific destination in as short amount of a time as possible, and a journey in which time is no object and the destination is nowhere in particular. And, because balloon travel is one of the main features of the story, it points out that balloon travel is ideal for the second kind of journey.

EDIT: Well shit, this is why I shouldn't post late at night. I interpreted this thread as what media would you like to see as a movie Strange. My bad.

 

[Singularly Datarific]

Book: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. One of the few excellent Sci-Fi I've read.
Film: Midnight in Paris. I say so because my brother and I had an argument identical to the characters in the movie 5 minutes before the movie started.
TV: Battlestar Galactica is made of excellence, if you're into serious Sci-Fi.
Music: God is an Astronaut (the band)
Video Game: Bastion. Hadn't had such a well-executed narrative since Portal.

Film- I'm going to go with Midnight in Paris too. I really liked that movie.
