This isn't a debate about genetic engineering but I'm thinking about going into it so I was wondering if anyone knows what they do in a typical day how much education you need what to focus on if I want to become one and how much it typically pays

Average day - Paperwork, paperwork, and fiddling with viruses.
Education - A shit ton.
Specific Education - Biology, chemistry, virology
Pay - Depends if your a government/college scientist or a working for the industry. If you really want to get into genetic engineering, I'd forget about this. Its an emerging field that as of yet has little application. In other words, you'll be making enough. And thats it.

EDIT:

Hmm... median pay is actually 65k. Guess you'll need all that money, because your going to have to pay off school debt from your Doctorate in Biology.

The best thing for you to do is to actually talk to someone in the field, that will give you the best idea on whether you actually want to do this as a career

to progress above the title of 'lab pleb' you'd need lots of XPs or else moar level ups (MSc or PhD)...

Also human genetics rather than genetic engineering has many applications in medicine, forensics et cetera.
