Genre Hopping

Would it be possible to take a series such as Halo or Warcraft and change genres with each release? Let me suggest an alternate history. Lets say Halo: Combat Evolved was released as is but Halo 2 were an RTS and Halo 3 was released as an RPG? Could this kind of genre hopping work as a model or would it fail and why?

It would fail because once a certain series has established it genre the creators mostly won't change the style...unless of course they become bored and can't come up fresh ideas

look at how much people whine when they make minor changes to the original games.

Plus it would be a failure from a money making point of view... "not broke dont fix."
